Signs and symptoms of acidosis are not always easily noticeable. In fact acidosis can be asymptomatic or can be accompanied by vague asthenia, nausea or vomiting. A distinctive symptom of acidosis is hyperpnoea, an increased depth followed by an increased frequency of breathing. Severe acidosis can determine cardio circulatory shock due to a reduced myocardial contractility or progressive sensory alteration.","PeriodicalId":109386,"journal":{"name":"Prevention and Research","volume":"321 2","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131716093","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Francesco","doi":"10.11138/PR/2013.2.4.146","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.11138/PR/2013.2.4.146","url":null,"abstract":"Background: in the field of professional liability the case law evaluates the doctor’s performance critically placing itself at the patient’s side at the expense of the physician. This attitude has convinced the doctors to try to protect themselves using the practice of defensive medicine. The defensive medicine does not want to protect the patient’s health but its aim is to avoid legal medical liability following the medical cares. Objectives: this paper has the purpose of searching the causes of the increase of caesarean section in Italy and if this is a clinical need or if it is a sign of the spread of defensive medicine, in particular with reference to the Italian case law and the recent issue of the guidelines. Methods: the authors analyzed: 1) the data of the Ministry of Health, CeDAP 2009, published in 2012; 2) the data published by the Agency for Public Health of the Lazio Region in February 2012; 3) the guidelines for caesarean section in 2011-2012. They also carried out a systematic review of the Italian case law in case of failed or delayed caesarean section. Results/Discussion and Conclusions: the available data show an increase of caesarean section in Italy, putting it at the first place in Europe for the use of this surgery. In particular, the national distribution is not uniform: in fact, it is more used in southern Italy and in private structures than in public ones and the incidence increases with the increasing age of the mother. The Lazio Region has several detailed data: they confirm what we have just said, and they underline an increase of births during working days. However, the increase in caesarean section is not associated with an increase in maternal and/or fetal benefits. The analyzed data attest that medical care is not appropriate; it does not protect health, but it protects the will of both the patient and the doctor and possible interests of health facilities: 1) patient prefers to give birth in small private clinics where the gynecologist works during working days; 2) the gynecologists satisfy their patient’s wishes to avoid anxieties of natural childbirth and to prevent the risk of contentious due to failed or delayed caesarean section; 3) possible interests of health facilities that see an increase of their refunds for health service. We think that the use of guidelines related to caesarean section and much information given to the mother about complications of caesarean section would limit the use of defensive medicine and would protect the health of both the pregnant woman and the unborn child.","PeriodicalId":109386,"journal":{"name":"Prevention and Research","volume":"138 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132181238","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The scombroid fish poisoning is a chemical poisoning characterized by symptoms that appear from 10 minutes to 2 hours after the consumption of scombroid and not scombroid fish. The scombroid fishes naturally contain high levels of histidine which is converted to histamine as a result of the action of the histidine decarboxylase contained in bacteria, which grow and multiply if there are no appropriate conditions to control their growth. Symptoms are characterized by rashes on the face, neck and upper chest, flushing, sweating, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal cramps, headache, dizziness, palpitations, oral burning sensation, metallic taste and hypotension, which usually resolve within 24 hours. It was recently reported in literature (2015), a case of Kounis syndrome with coronary vasospasm precipitated by scombroid fish poisoning. The rapid cooling of the fish, and the strict maintenance of the cold chain until consumption are essential to prevent the degradation of the fish, the proliferation of bacteria, the histidine decarboxylase activation, the conversion of histidine to histamine and the development of an anaphylactoid reaction resulting in ingestion.","PeriodicalId":109386,"journal":{"name":"Prevention and Research","volume":"32 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"134562342","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The aim of this study is to test the hypothesis that an ICD determines a deterioration in the quality of life in relation to health status. Methods: data were collected through interviews with a non-probabilistic sample of convenience. The instrument used was the SF-36, which investigates the quality of life in relation to health status. The collected data were entered into a database (Excel®) and processed with the software Matlab® to perform a multivariate analysis. Results: the analysis shows a significant worsening of quality of life in patients with defibrillator in 3 domains, which refer to physical health, while those in reference to mental health have not shown significant changes. Nevertheless, the majority of patients perceive their health basically unchanged (37%) compared to a year ago. This is probably due to the fact that all subjects enrolled in the study have not experienced arrhythmic events treated with shock. Discussion: the initial hypothesis that the ICD determines a deterioration in the quality of life is partly confirmed. On one hand the physical health suffers the effects of the defibrillator, as shown by the worsening of score of the 3 domains regarding physical aspects. On the other hand mental health, which is composed of both the psychological and social aspects, it is not affected.","PeriodicalId":109386,"journal":{"name":"Prevention and Research","volume":"130 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133395591","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

To gain traction, however, it is important that research on the sustainability of materials is funded at levels significant enough to identify early warnings, and that possible responsible regulatory systems provide incentives for safer and sustainable materials during the life cycle of materials and systems. The concept of protecting human health and integrity is accepted by all. The rules by which society tries to achieve this humanist objective were, for chemical risk, at the origin of the creation of the system of reparation in the OSH (occupational safety and health) which is relative to a given cultural situation in a specific space and time. The possible translation from chemical risk to nano-technological risk is discussed in the present paper. The difficult definition of what is a nanoparticle is a first obstacle on this transfer. A second corresponds to the integration of numerous nano-systems into devices, leading to a more complex way to explore the cause-effect relationship used in risk mastering.","PeriodicalId":109386,"journal":{"name":"Prevention and Research","volume":"23 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123544524","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
