Drawing on data from a jail's central intake screening system, the authors argue for more systematic attention by service providers in the community and criminal justice personnel to the disabling conditions that may precipitate and reinforce criminal behavior. This amenable offender was described as anxious, intelligent, and less involved in crime. The purpose of this study was to determine if and by what means inmates participating in a voluntary counseling program at the Hamilton, Alabama Correctional Facility could be distinguished from those not volunteering for counseling. Martray","doi":"10.1300/J264V14N02_06","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.1300/J264V14N02_06","url":null,"abstract":"Abstract While numerous investigations have evaluated both the outcome and process components of peer group treatment, studies of the behavior patterns described in that literature remain virtually nonexistent. This study sought to validate the juvenile offender treatment typology utilized within the peer treatment programs of a state youth services agency. The results suggest the behavior typology described in the peer treatment literature has a basis in psychological theory and can provide information critical to an agency's program evaluation, as well as, a youth's residential treatment and community re-integration.
