A review of experimental designs has demonstrated that serious methodological flaws invalidate the research findings. A before and after experimental-control group design, with subjects who were matched, paired and randomly assigned to experimental and control groups, was developed and applied to data on delinquents from intake to follow-up. The results of the comparison of experimental and control groups indicated that vocational rehabilitation did not enhance significantly delinquent boys' vocational development, self-esteem, and attitude towards authority, and made no significant difference in reducing recidivism. Results from recent studies employing samples from varied populations have generally shown LOC to be multidimensional, that there are two distinct types of externals: those who perceive reinforcement as determined by chance factors and those who perceive reinforcement as controlled by powerful others. The purpose of the present study was to investigate the dimensionality of the LOC construct in a prison sample. Given the nature of control in prisons, the dimensionality of LOC was expected to show variation. The Levenson (1972) multidimensional LOC measure was administered to a sample of volunteers (n = 174) from randomly selected inmates at a state prison for women in the Western United States. Based upon this assumption, many delinquency prevention programs include techniques for elevating the self-esteem of juveniles. This paper reports an evaluation of such a program through a One-Group Pretest-Posttest design. Significant changes in self-concept (as measured by the Tennessee Self-Concept Scale) and in the cognitive domain (as measured by the Stanford Diagnostic Reading Test) were observed at two of five sites evaluated. Yet without some effort at defining sex offender specific treatment, persons who make referrals (i.e., judges, therapists, etc.) for such care are without any criteria with which to judge its efficacy. A pilot questionnaire has been developed based on the research and clinical literature to record and quantify sex offender specific behaviors. This will facilitate the collection of data which will be utilized in the future to identify variables which assess responses to various types of treatment for adolescent sex offenders. Eventually, it is hoped the instrument will help the clinician, treatment program/staff, and court officials feel “safer” and be more accurate in the treatment and discharge planning for adolescent sex offenders.
