In approaching the \"lessons\" of penal history, the authors state that three general stages of development have characterized the evolution of penology: the Age of Retribution, the Age of the Penitentiary, and the modern Age of Corrections. The authors further suggest that each succeeding stage has emerged as a result of deficiencies in its predecessor, that the passage of time has not necessarily brought improvement, and that criminological thought has been hampered. to some extent, by an imbalance between social and legal theory since the appearance of the late 18th-centugv classicists. This empirical longitudinal study examines the theoretical and administrative implications of information provided by a sociopath typology. Criminal history records of sociopathic and nonsociopathic felons were examined for evidence of career adjustments over an 11-year period. Results show that Hostile sociopaths had the highest risk of conviction while Nonsociopaths had the lowest conviction risk. Although data analysis is not yet complete, the findings indicate that as a single indicator the sociopath typology provides parole boards more decision-making and control value than almost any other variable.","PeriodicalId":107632,"journal":{"name":"Journal of offender counseling, services & rehabilitation","volume":"77 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2008-10-26","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116905115","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Representative studies from the social sciences, relying on the self-reports of convicted felons, and from the “hard” sciences, utilizing “more” and “less” sensitive methods of laboratory assay, yield data that propose, at the extremes, that one of every six or one of every two felonies is at the least “lubricated” by drug use or abuse. But there is insufficient evidence as yet to conclude to the differential effects of specific substances with known biochemical properties that produce particular biochemical effects on the acceleration of particular types of felony crime. However, the literature is relatively silent on actual risk assessment for abuse cases. In the study described in this report, with a sample (N = 20) composed of abuse cases referred to a local spouse treatment center, a structured interview was developed from the research literature which addresses risk factors, focussing on the woman's perception of her mate's personality/behavioral characteristics, her perceptions of the relationship, and other situational factors associated with risk. The various types of abuse experienced were also documented. The majority of risk factors associated with spouse abuse as reported in the literature was confirmed in the sample. Utilizing the results of the study and the available literature, a pilot risk assessment instrument is presented, along with discussion of the efficacy of a standardized risk instrument.","PeriodicalId":107632,"journal":{"name":"Journal of offender counseling, services & rehabilitation","volume":"16 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2008-10-22","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127902131","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The sensitizing ideas of structure, control, contemporaneous, and developmental matching from the Conceptual Level Matching Model (Hunt, 1971) inform the study. Besides specification of the types, quality, and settings of staff-youth interactions, components of a highly structured environment are described. Several strategies promoting the developmental and contemporaneous environment matched to youths who need high structure are illustrated. The tension of implementing those characteristics necessary for contemporaneous and those required for developmental matching is discussed, and certain activities that manage the tension are described.","PeriodicalId":107632,"journal":{"name":"Journal of offender counseling, services & rehabilitation","volume":"45 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2008-10-20","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115038243","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
