In it, Ḥusayn briefly recounts his flight from the Biqāʿ Valley in what is now northern Lebanon to Karbala in southern Iraq. Though undated, the text suggests that Ḥusayn’s journey took place in the winter of 1548-49 and that Ḥusayn was concerned to escape detection by authorities. He left Baalbek soon after his teacher Zayn al-Dīn al-ʿĀmilī, later famous as al-Shahīd al-Thānī (911-965/1506-1558), left that town, probably as a consequence of the same incident or problem that caused Zayn al-Dīn to give up his position as professor of law at the Nūriyya Madrasa there. Ḥusayn evidently already had the intention to seek safety in Safavid Iran, even though he ended up staying in Iraq for an extended period and only entered Iran about five years later, in 961/1554.","PeriodicalId":107625,"journal":{"name":"Shii Studies Review","volume":"160 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-04-04","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123976919","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The notion of religious aesthetics as developed by Birgit Meyer is used as an analytical tool. It is argued that al-Mukhtār accomplished his political endeavour partly by introducing and controlling three “aesthetic forms” which functioned as “media” between the people and the deceased ʿAlī b. Abī Ṭālib: his claim to act on behalf of ʿAlī’s son Ibn al-Ḥanafiyya, whom he called al-mahdī, “the rightly guided”; his call to revenge for the killing of ʿAlī’s son Ḥusayn; and his exhibiting of a chair that he claimed had belonged to ʿAlī. The accounts of these three media, the author furthermore argues, have an historical foundation. Finally he holds that through these media al-Mukhtār was able to channel the needs and aspirations of many of the Shiites of Kufa into political action.","PeriodicalId":107625,"journal":{"name":"Shii Studies Review","volume":"22 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-04-04","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114500598","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Onto-cosmology is addressed in particular. The texts are in part copied from the Risāla al-Jāmiʿa and the Risāla Jāmiʿat al-Jāmiʿa. Sometimes they show similarities with Balīnūs, the Arabic pseudo-Apollonius of Tyana whom recent studies consider to play an important role in Ismaili thought. Though based on emanatism, onto-cosmology shares the religious terminology referred to hypostases; it introduces the concept of ibdāʿ besides that of emanation, the cosmic role of Imperative and the conception of God “beyond everything”; and it re-examines the Neoplatonic hypostases in the light of the Scriptural tale of Adam. Even if the additions were later interpolations, they demonstrate that the Ikhwān’s leaning towards Ismailism was a common belief at least in a certain manuscript tradition.","PeriodicalId":107625,"journal":{"name":"Shii Studies Review","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-04-04","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130039180","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
