The leading objectives of the article were to explore whether the learners who have approach to electronic glosses have better reading scores than the ones who have no access to electronic glosses in an ESL classroom and to investigate whether the learners who have access to electronic glosses have a higher vocabulary than the ones who have no access to electronic glosses in an ESL classroom. A quantitative research method was adopted to carry out this research. The data was collected from 40 students at a private school in Rawalpindi with different socio-economic backgrounds. The collected data was analyzed by three different analyses of variance (ANOVA) conducted to get the results of reading comprehension of the students followed by instant vocabulary test, and delayed vocabulary test. Moreover, four univariate analyses of the covariate (ANCOVAs) were introduced to examine the hypotheses using the Statistical Package for Social Science (SPSS-24) software. The results of present study demonstrated the benefits of the electronic glossing in ESL classroom. The use of electronic glossing should not be neglected while learning English as second language in the private education sector of Pakistan, where direct method is used for teaching English as second language.","PeriodicalId":106618,"journal":{"name":"Sindh Journal of Linguistics","volume":" 18","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-05-10","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"140992078","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The school library has a significant impact on its users' love of reading and serves as a source of inspiration. This study sought to understand how the secondary school section's pupils could develop a reading culture through the use of the school library. The goals were to research how secondary school students use the school library to establish their reading habits and how English language teachers can help students develop their reading habits. The network diagram of the variables' conceptual framework served as the study's compass. The research used a descriptive survey methodology. Conveniently, a school was chosen. In addition, 25 English teachers from the school were identified in order to collect information about how they help pupils develop good reading habits. A total of 80 students from secondary schools were employed in the sample, including 80 students chosen using purposive sampling in the Secondary Section. Both open-ended and closed-ended questionnaires were used to obtain the data. It was determined that students used the library to do their projects, do research, and take notes, but they also visited the library at a distinct time slot once a week when they could read and write reviews. English language teachers had a variety of responsibilities, such as encouraging pupils to read; proposing books to librarians from various genres, and helping students create in-class libraries. The conclusion is that because of their exam-focused curriculum, kids don't have enough time for leisure reading. As a result, schools should add more library time to their class schedules to encourage students to develop a reading habit.","PeriodicalId":106618,"journal":{"name":"Sindh Journal of Linguistics","volume":"17 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-03-11","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125083637","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

ECAT (Engineering College Admission) test is a high stakes exam. In Pakistan every year number of candidates with the hope of getting admission appeared in the test. The current study aims to explore the washback effects of ECAT on its test takers (both successful and unsuccessful). To investigate the washback effects of ECAT, the researcher adopted qualitative approach. The data collection tool used for the current study is a semi structured interviews. The total number of the participants (n=30). The participants of the study are divided into two groups: Group A successful candidates, Group B unsuccessful candidates. The current study used the convenient sampling. From the data analysis, the constant comparative Method (CCM) Maykutt and More (1994) guideline are used. The findings of the study revealed that ECAT has strong positive and negative consequences on test takers. The successful test takers were seemed more focused, disciplined and hardworking worried about to get success in the test. The washback effect on the unsuccessful test takers revealed the fact that few participants were never interested in the ECAT. Beside this there were other factors that contribute to their failure. The perceptions of the both groups about ECAT showed, it is a transparent test and the format and content and their system of conducting the entrance exam is good. The implications of this study are for the future test takers and the test developers to ensure the validity, reliability and quality of the test. Secondly, to build a trust relationship between test takers and test developers. Thirdly, in the washback research, it will be a good addition to the washback effect of test on test takers, as they are most neglected stakeholders in washback research at a national and international level. It will be a good addition in literature available for washback research.","PeriodicalId":106618,"journal":{"name":"Sindh Journal of Linguistics","volume":"53 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-03-11","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116122902","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Semiotics is the study of signs, symbols and colors. They all carry meanings which is difficult for a layperson to decode. Some kind of ideology is constructed by using these symbols, colors, and catchy expressions from which the viewer is unaware. The study adopted cross-sectional research design within the qualitative research paradigm. Simple random sampling technique is utilized for selecting the sample and purposive sampling technique is used for the selection of commercial. Interview is used as the data collection instrument. Since semiotics is not studied in Pakistan as a separate branch, hence many people are unfamiliar about this science. They unconsciously use colors, images, music, and other signs regardless of their implications on the receiver. This research shows that semiotics occupies a pivotal role in the overall success of commercials. It gives awareness to people in order to judge and see things through different and broad perspective, give them a critical eye to watch commercials with conscious mind, and to understand the certain ideology behind them (Sajid & Khan, 2020). The results revealed the problems occurred to the students while speaking. This research explains the problems faced by the students of IELL by dividing them into three categories. The first category is linguistic problems, including vocabulary, pronunciation, and grammar. The second category is psychological and external problems, including low motivation, anxiety, negative attitude towards the target language, and no environment for second language English. The last category is teaching methods and materials problems, including untrained teachers, traditional teaching methods, and syllabus problems. These problems are common in the ESL context due to the faulty education system. The last part of the study recommends some steps to be taken by the students, schools, and future researchers regarding speaking skills improvements.","PeriodicalId":106618,"journal":{"name":"Sindh Journal of Linguistics","volume":"9 4","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-09-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131637556","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
