However, this traditional model is rather unsuitable for applications with more complex network and latency requirements. The distributed cloud, where the large centralized data centers at the network core are supplanted or augmented by a set of smaller geographically distributed data centers at the network edge, can deliver such applications more efficiently. In this paper, we focus on the problem of delivering the distributed cloud by (1) providing a characterization of the main requirements that need to be met in order to realize the distributed cloud, (2) introducing an experimental management and orchestration system for the distributed cloud, called Wind, that comprehensively addresses each of the underlined challenges, and (3) quantifying the advantages of delivering the distributed cloud via Wind in a large scale simulated setting. Collected results show that Wind can help reduce the overall latency between applications and users, and the bandwidth cost to deliver an application in the distributed cloud significantly.","PeriodicalId":106002,"journal":{"name":"2015 IEEE World Congress on Services","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-06-27","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130815369","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The elasticity and the economy of scale are the intrinsic elements that dierentiate it from traditional computing paradigm. A good capacity planning method is a necessary factor but not sucient to fully exploit Cloud elasticity. This paper proposes innovative policies for resource management to achieve the optimal balance between capacity and quality of Cloud services while supporting Cloud technical and conceptual limitations. The main idea is to control finely the scalability and the termination of virtual machines in regards of several criteria such as the lifecycle of the instances (e.g. Initialization time) or their cost. The approach was evaluated with a real infrastructure (Amazon EC2) and an application test bed. Experimental results illustrate the soundness of the proposed approach and the impact of scalability/termination resource policies. Using Delta Scaling, the cost saving of as much as 30% can be achieved while causing the minimum number of violations, as small as 1%.","PeriodicalId":106002,"journal":{"name":"2015 IEEE World Congress on Services","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-06-27","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128898123","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, defining a non-trivial scaling behavior that goes beyond the feature set provided by existing solutions is still challenging. In this paper we present SPEEDL, a declarative and extensible domain-specific language that simplifies the creation of elastic scaling behavior on top of IaaS clouds. SPEEDL simplifies the creation of event-driven policies for resource management (How many resources, and what resource types, are needed?), as well as task mapping (Which tasks should be handled by which resources?). Based on a dataset of real-life scaling policies, we demonstrate that SPEEDL can cover most scaling behaviors real-life developers want to express, and that the resulting SPEEDL policies are at the same time substantially more compact, easier to read, and less error-prone than the same behavior expressed via a general-purpose programming language.","PeriodicalId":106002,"journal":{"name":"2015 IEEE World Congress on Services","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-06-27","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130528009","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In recent researches, most of works deploy service instances for each workflow independently, and the sharing of service instance is not considered across compositions related with different SLAs. This may cause several high-performance service instances are exclusively accessed by specific workflow instances, which can incur the following two issues: First, the remaining service instances cannot satisfy SLA for other users when high-performance ones are monopolized by some requests. Second, the utilization ratio of high-performance services will be decreased. To address these problems, a service composition model supporting the instances sharing in multiple SLA environments is provided in this paper. Since the QoS-aware service composition problem is known as NP-hard, which needs a significant amount of computation time to discover optimal solutions, a solving method based on multi-objective genetic algorithm, called MSCS, is proposed to solve it heuristically. The effectiveness of this approach is demonstrated via experiments.","PeriodicalId":106002,"journal":{"name":"2015 IEEE World Congress on Services","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-06-27","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116621002","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This is because a user may have a budgetary constraint or a deadline for executing the BoT application in order to keep the overall execution costs low. The research in this paper is motivated to investigate task scheduling on the cloud, given two hard constraints based on a user-defined budget and a deadline. A heuristic algorithm is proposed and implemented to satisfy the hard constraints for executing the BoT application in a cost effective manner. The proposed algorithm is evaluated using four scenarios that are based on the trade-off between performance and the cost of using different cloud resource types. The experimental evaluation confirms the feasibility of the algorithm in satisfying the constraints. The key observation is that multiple resource types can be a better alternative to using a single type of resource.","PeriodicalId":106002,"journal":{"name":"2015 IEEE World Congress on Services","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-06-27","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131252746","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Applying the concept of certification to cloud services requires systems which continuously detect ongoing changes of the service and assess their impact on customer requirements. In this paper, we propose eight language classes for cloud service certification systems to facilitate research in design and implementation of these systems. To that end, we draw on language classes developed for signature-based intrusion detection systems and apply them to cloud service certification systems.","PeriodicalId":106002,"journal":{"name":"2015 IEEE World Congress on Services","volume":"98 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-06-27","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121879509","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

One way to address the quality of such systems is through testing. Software testing provides software providers and their clients with techniques to characterize the internal and external quality of their systems, by specifying test cases to check how systems react under different circumstances. In the context of web services the situation changes, software providers become service providers. In other words, they do not provide a physical software to their clients, instead they allow them to invoke remote code from their system. This change affects the way we look at testing itself. In the web service paradigm clients do not own services, instead they invoke them. Different approaches for testing web services have been reported in the literature, with different techniques and using different input information to generate test cases. Considering the topic of web services testing, as a subject for this systematic review is a challenging undertaking, mainly due to the extensive amount of literature in the subject. To narrow it, we have focused on one single particularity that affects dramatically the testing process. That is the specifications used to generate test cases. To this end, in this paper we present a systematic review of the specifications used for testing web services. The outcome of this study answers key questions involved in the advantages and disadvantages of the existing specifications as well as the potential improvements that could lead to more robust web services testing process.","PeriodicalId":106002,"journal":{"name":"2015 IEEE World Congress on Services","volume":"25 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-06-27","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132710722","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, most of the existing approaches for IoT device management are designed in a centralized way, whose efficiency meets challenges recently because of the large scale of heterogeneous device modules and highly dynamic essence of the networks. To tackle this challenge, we propose a distributed approach for IoT device management and service composition from a social network point of view. Specifically, we introduce Restful web service to encapsulate heterogeneous IoT device modules, providing uniform interfaces for IoT service invocation. According to the relationships between IoT devices, social network theory is applied to model IoT services in different dimensions. After fully considering the social properties, a flexible and scalable schemes for IoT service composition is designed to satisfactorily meet users' requirements from several aspects. Finally, simulation experiments based on dataset from reality are conducted to validate the effectiveness of our approach.","PeriodicalId":106002,"journal":{"name":"2015 IEEE World Congress on Services","volume":"120 3","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-06-27","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"113999586","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
