Joshua replaces Moses and in the order of grace, Jesus Savior replaces the ancient Law. Fathers conceived of the history of Israel as a unique sign announcing the Christian life. Similar elements can be found in Caesarius’ preaching. For the bishop of Provence, Joshua is the one who would lead God’s people into the Promised Land and he gave to them the true inheritance. The figure of Joshua is associated with Christ. For Caesarius the Israelites’ crossing of the Jordan River was a typological form of baptism. This is an announcement of the introduction of grace and the offering of supernatural goods by Christ, whose figure was the son of Nun. The new generation of Israelites, led by Joshua, is a prefiguration of the Church. It had replaced the once chosen nation (Synagogue). Caesarius was aware that he read the text of the Book of Joshua in the light of the Church’s faith and practice and the pastoral needs of his congregation. He was also sensitive to pastoral needs arising in his community. The decrees have never lost their formal status even though they have been nearly universally abandoned by theologians. In 1955 an anonymous article was published whose goal was to diminish the authority of the “Responses” and present them as outdated. However, there was no ecclesiastical authority of any sort behind the article. Kasprzak","doi":"10.15633/ps.3781","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.15633/ps.3781","url":null,"abstract":"It seems that the homilies of Caesarius, Bishop of Arles, about the faithful having access to canonical penance, were characterized by a sensitivity to the faithful and what was possible for them to practically obtain. The systematic tightening of the standards of public penance, undertaken by subsequent Gallic synods and their legalistic treatment of it, led to a crisis of this practice in the Church of Gaul in the first half of the sixth century. Caesarius, observing the norms of official canonical penance in his teaching, accepted the custom of the vast majority of the faithful, who postponed public penance until the last moments of their lives. So with that in mind, he urged them to make an effort in faith and to be constantly converted. Repentance become the way to practise this Christian conversion. Making it possible for the faithful to prepare themselves throughout their lives through acts of repentance, to be ready for canonical penance at the end of life. He reveals the bond between Him and the Son, and at the same time hides it from the pride of the scribes (11, 25–27). The Father should meet with a respectful fear of the people because He ultimately decides on the fate of man. The note of the possibility of definitive rejection by the Father is mitigated by His care for and knowledge of every detail of human life (10, 28–31). From the fact that God is the Father can be derived an apparent common brotherhood that connects disciples which has nothing to do with any form of dependency. The Eucharist is a re-presentation and perpetuation of the sacrifice of Jesus, offered on the Cross. Mother Ledochowska demonstrates that it is impossible to separate the mystery of the real presence of Christ under the species of bread and wine from His sacrifice. She encourages us to adopt the attitude of love for Jesus–the Host, the attitude of gratitude and adoration of Eucharistic Christ and to live the sacrificial and selfless love for the others. He left writings, which are still of importance to us today. The Cesearius’ sermons on Genesis and Exodus preached during Lent, call to mind numerous images of baptism where the stress is set on the mystery of the cross. That teaching on Baptism was addressed to catechumens but also to the Christian community preparing to celebrate Easter. After baptism, Christians should not be falling into sin because by doing this they could become even worse than they were before. The first shows Mary’s place in allegorical exegesis, and the second one illustrates the most important truths of faith regarding her. The moon, the earth, and the marriage chamber, are for Bishop of Arles, the most important symbols of the Mother of our Lord. Mary’s Motherhood of God, virginity and holiness are the fundamental truths of faith which he proclaims. The shape of Caesarius’ Mariology was primarily influenced by his pastoral experience, which is why the truths he presents are not innovative. On many occasions, Fulton J. Sheen undertook a similar mission in his radio addresses broadcasted for over twenty years in the radio program “The Catholic Hour”. This famous preacher, not only meditated, interpreted and preached on the words of Christ, but he also deliberated on the life of the Blessed Virgin Mary, explained different parts of the Holy Mass and the meaning of the particular words of the “Our Father”. He deliberated on the virtues and the capital sins, put some new light on the blessings of Jesus, and often directed his thought-provoking meditative reflections to those listeners, who turned away from God.
