CCIs, however, generally have not focused on young children. In this article, we synthesize developmental science and current understanding of CCIs to suggest a number of ways for CCIs to increase their emphasis on early development. We begin with a review of developmental research that illustrates the effects of community characteristics on children's development. We then review the goals, strategies, and principles of CCIs. These reviews illustrate that despite overlapping emphases, developmental science and CCIs could be linked more generatively. We propose ...","PeriodicalId":105976,"journal":{"name":"Children's Services","volume":"83 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114568004","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The commentary focuses on 4 major themes. The first theme is the complexity of community-based systems of care and the special challenge that this presents for their evaluation. The second theme is the need for theories of change for systems of care to be more clearly developed and elucidated. The third theme discusses the implications of the diversity of the population served for the development of interventions and for the application of interventions that have been tested on other populations. The fourth theme examines strategies for conducting evaluations, given the constraints that exist in large evaluations of community-wide interventions.","PeriodicalId":105976,"journal":{"name":"Children's Services","volume":"7 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114020252","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Results indicated that 33 families caring for a child with EBD who received respite care experienced significantly better outcomes overall than did 28 families in a wait-list comparison group, including fewer incidents of out-of-home placement, greater optimism about caring for the child at home, reductions in some areas of caregiving stress, and lower incidence of negative behaviors expressed in the community. However, significant between-group differences were not found for several other variables, and regression analyses suggested that more intensive allocation of service hours was necessary to have a more pervasive impact. The results support the hypothesis that moderate amounts of respite services benefit families with children experiencing EBD but suggest that respite plus other individu...","PeriodicalId":105976,"journal":{"name":"Children's Services","volume":"111 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115261430","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This program, supported by the federal Center for Mental Health Services at the Substance Abuse Mental Health Services Administration, has established systems of care for mental health services in 67 communities throughout the United States. Among the 22 communities receiving grants in 1993 and 1994, descriptive information was collected on 44,640 children who received services. Longitudinal outcome study enrollment included 18,884 children, with data collected on 2,580 children who continued in services through 24 months. The average age of children served was 12.1 years; 61.9% were boys, 54.7% were White, and 60.3% had annual household incomes below $15,000. Primary diagnoses included conduct-related disorders (29.3%), attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (13.6%), and depression or dysthymia (26%...","PeriodicalId":105976,"journal":{"name":"Children's Services","volume":"576 ","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133557092","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Since its inception, this program has had the goal of using federal resources to facilitate the development of community-based systems of care that will be sustained by state- and local-level resources after federal funding. Much of this work requires a sustained emphasis on the policy implications of the program to influence public policy changes. These policy implications are discussed across multiple target audiences and impact areas at the federal, state, and local levels. The professional training and research communities are highlighted as important audiences to inform to facilitate continued policy change. The relations between data from this program and other recent federal initiatives to support research and evaluation in children's mental health services are discussed.","PeriodicalId":105976,"journal":{"name":"Children's Services","volume":"5 4 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131945858","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

These circumstances include (a) the preexistence of a system-of-care philosophy prior to the integration of managed care, (b) stakeholder involvement in managed care planning and implementation, (c) use of a broad array of providers and sufficient support for case management and care coordination activities, (d) identification and support of high utilizer groups within the managed care system, and (e) financial compatibility between managed care and systems of care.","PeriodicalId":105976,"journal":{"name":"Children's Services","volume":"12 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126805985","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
