The need to consider alternative integrated models of funding, managing, and providing mental health services for this population is emphasized. Youth were randomly assigned to receive MST versus usual community-based services. Results indicated that MST (but not usual services) significantly increased school attendance at posttreatment, and that these treatment gains were maintained at the 6-month follow-up assessment. S. Commission on Child and Family Welfare in 1995. This commission developed specific recommendations for the court system and for agencies working with children and families. Their final report was presented to the President and Congress in 1996, and the recommendations may serve as impetus for legislative action. The recommendations also have direct implications for psychologists who work with children and families. The American Psychological Association Division of School Psychology developed a task force to review the commission recommendations. Using the preliminary report of the task force, expanded suggestions for psychologists working with children and families, as well as research topics and training suggestions, are presented.","PeriodicalId":105976,"journal":{"name":"Children's Services","volume":"33 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1999-03-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125840071","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In this article, data from interviews with 93 African American and Hispanic adolescent mothers conducted 6 years after the delivery of their first child are used to comment on the potentially negative effects of aspects of the federal Personal Responsibility and Work Opportunity Reconciliation Act of 1996 that target adolescent mothers. Three global strategies designed to reduce their long-term welfare dependence are addressed, namely, mandating adult-supervised residences, requiring schooling or job training without child care provisions, and requiring cooperation with paternity identification to enforce child support regulations. Findings from this qualitative study clearly demonstrate that reform strategies need to move beyond mandating personal responsi...","PeriodicalId":105976,"journal":{"name":"Children's Services","volume":"27 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1999-03-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127549710","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In this study, data collected by staff at 3 community-based family support centers were used to demonstrate an approach to documenting the extent of family-centered practice. Two primary research questions were addressed. First, what evidence is there that program services were delivered in ways consistent with family-centered program philosophies? Second, are there family demographic or psychosocial characteristics that can predict the amount, type, and intensity of service involvement in such voluntary services? Results indicate that although families utilized a wide array of services, there is little evidence that services were provided based on individualized needs of families. However, families who were cat...","PeriodicalId":105976,"journal":{"name":"Children's Services","volume":"28 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1999-03-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132634663","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The evaluation revealed that team members were committed to the principle of integrated family services but held very disparate perspectives on the team's purpose and design. The resulting lack of cohesion contributed to the decision to disband the team. A survey by Rae and Worchel (1991) indicated that there was a lack of professional consensus on a single global question assessing views on corporal punishment. More information is needed on the specific issues affecting decision making regarding corporal punishment. Survey data were collected from 237 members (40% return rate) of Division 37 (Child, Youth, and Family Services) and of Section One (Clinical Child Psychology), Division 12 (Clinical Psychology) of the American Psychological Association regarding the ethical beliefs and professional practices of psychologists concerning parental use of corporal punishment. MBPS is one of the least understood forms of child maltreatment, frequently goes unrecognized, and is difficult to detect and confirm. Intervention often fails to protect the child victims, and perpetrators are frequently resistant to treatment. This article provides the current definition of the behaviors associated with this form of abuse, describes the factors that interfere with recognition, and reviews the circumstances that complicate confirmation and obstruct intervention. We offer an overview of the warning signs of MBPS and describe a procedural framework to guide confirmation efforts in the context of shared responsibility. A multidisciplinary approach to case management that protects the child victim and considers the rights of parents also is discussed.","PeriodicalId":105976,"journal":{"name":"Children's Services","volume":"61 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132377356","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Data were collected in 3 federally funded systems of care and 3 matched comparison sites. Comparisons of system scores across paired sites suggested that the federal program that funded the systems of care helped those sites come closer than the comparison sites to the ideals articulated in the principles. There was also less variability in scores across the funded systems of care, with greater variability found across the comparison sites' scores. Some movement toward the system-of-care approach was demonstrated in the comparison sites, however, despite their lack of special funding. The systems of care performed especially well in the principles of interagency involvement an...","PeriodicalId":105976,"journal":{"name":"Children's Services","volume":"38 6","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"120912802","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
