It presents the community toolbar, a portal solution which provides functions for a community to become a lively and growing virtual community. Especially the paper focuses the support of group awareness in communities. Firstly, we discuss the requirements for awareness support. Secondly, the concepts of awareness profiles and awareness contexts are introduced. The main chapter discusses the functionality of the community toolbar in detail.","PeriodicalId":105726,"journal":{"name":"12th Euromicro Conference on Parallel, Distributed and Network-Based Processing, 2004. Several software systems have been developed that make distributed applications available to an application programmer. Although these systems provide functionality for the design, execution, monitoring and control of distributed applications, they are not Web-based. The increasing use of Web technology for Internet and Intranet applications is making the Web an attractive framework for solving distributed applications, in particular, because the interface can be made platform independent. We present a Web-based environment which provide remote management of distributed applications. The environment allows the user to configure, execute, monitor and dynamically reconfigure distributed components. In addition the tool tolerates node failures to ensure service availability, and can be tailored to different distributed application platforms. The proposed tool is developed without changing the front-end Web server and does not require manual software installation on the client side as long as a client Web browser is available.","PeriodicalId":105726,"journal":{"name":"12th Euromicro Conference on Parallel, Distributed and Network-Based Processing, 2004. This class of analysis requires trustworthy simulation tools and representative workloads that allow us to know the real effectiveness of the improvement. We propose a methodology that enable the use of an important family of transactional workloads, such as decision support system workloads, in a full system simulator. In contrast to numerical applications, with this type of workload it is not possible to scale down the problem size in order to reduce the computational requirements of the simulation. We will show the stationary behaviour of the workload and how it can be employed to reduce computational requirements without significant loss. Taking into account this fact, we will show how simulating only 3% of the benchmark the maximum error in the main system performance metrics is approximately 5%.","PeriodicalId":105726,"journal":{"name":"12th Euromicro Conference on Parallel, Distributed and Network-Based Processing, 2004. These structural analyses involve processing thousands projection images taken from the specimen at different orientations. Regularized iterative reconstruction methods are well suited to deal with the extremely noise conditions found in those studies, but they are computationally expensive. Parallel computing then emerges as a natural solution for those problems allowing huge jobs to be run in clusters of workstations. This work describes and analyzes the parallel implementations of five 3D iterative reconstruction algorithms, including simultaneous and block-iterative methods. The evaluation of the parallel approaches is carried put in terms of speedups and computation versus communication times. It is shown that there are specific iterative methods that are specially well suited for parallelization, with a great level of scalability and fast convergence rates. This work draws the conclusion that the use of those parallel reconstruction methods is going to be central to afford \"grand challenge \" problems currently unapproachable in structural biology, such as structure determination at close-to-atomic resolution by electron microscopy.","PeriodicalId":105726,"journal":{"name":"12th Euromicro Conference on Parallel, Distributed and Network-Based Processing, 2004. This new computational infrastructure provides a promising platform to execute loosely coupled, high-throughput parameter sweep applications. This kind of applications arises naturally in many scientific and engineering fields like bioinformatics, computational fluid dynamics (CFD), particle physics, etc. The efficient execution and scheduling of parameter sweep applications is challenging because of the dynamic and heterogeneous nature of grids. We present a scheduling algorithm built on top of the GridWay framework that combines: (i) adaptive scheduling to reflect the dynamic grid characteristics; (ii) adaptive execution to migrate running jobs to better resources and provide fault tolerance; (iii) re-use of common files between tasks to reduce the file transfer overhead. The efficiency of the approach is demonstrated in the execution of a CFD application on a highly heterogeneous research testbed.","PeriodicalId":105726,"journal":{"name":"12th Euromicro Conference on Parallel, Distributed and Network-Based Processing, 2004. In particular the product of a sparse matrix by a dense vector (SpM/spl times/V) is studied. In the model, locality is established at run-time considering parameters that describe the structure of the sparse matrix involved in the computations. The problem of increasing the locality is formulated as a graph problem, whose solution indicates some appropriate reordering of rows and columns of the sparse matrix. The reordering algorithms were tested for a broad set of matrices. We have also performed a comparison with other reordering algorithms. The results lead to general conclusions about improving SMP performance for other sparse algebra codes.","PeriodicalId":105726,"journal":{"name":"12th Euromicro Conference on Parallel, Distributed and Network-Based Processing, 2004. For the last years, routing has been the area under most intensive research. In particular, on-demand routing protocols proposed are extremely attractive due to their low-overhead and efficiency. Currently, wireless ad-hoc networks lack multipath routing protocols. Multipath routing enables increased QoS support, load balancing and enhanced route stability. In this paper we present a new route discovery solution that increases the number of routes found, while reducing the routing overhead when compared to previous proposals. Simulation results show that the additional routing overhead imposed is low, and also some improvements are achieved in terms of goodput for both TCP and UDP traffic at average node speeds.","PeriodicalId":105726,"journal":{"name":"12th Euromicro Conference on Parallel, Distributed and Network-Based Processing, 2004. Strongly consistent global states (SCGS) are especially well suited for on-line controlling. Existing SCGS detecting algorithms work with process local states. They must wait for state terminations before complete states can be taken into account. Because of that the global states seen by a monitor always belong to the past. We present an algorithm, which works with unterminated local states. This approach lets the monitor detect SCGS sooner: currently lasting global states can be perceived promptly after they started. Application control based on SCGS detection should react quicker to arising situations when using the new algorithm. The quick reactions contribute to a better parallel/distributed application performance. Simulation tests confirm these suppositions. Our solution utilizes bounded maximal message transfer time. It is compared with another method, which employs frequent confirmation messages. While both methods can lead to similar application performance, our approach induces a few times lower both monitor load and network traffic.","PeriodicalId":105726,"journal":{"name":"12th Euromicro Conference on Parallel, Distributed and Network-Based Processing, 2004. We concentrate on group mobility because there is a growing attention on the development and evaluation of MANET's approach applied to personal area networks (PANs), especially based on Bluetooth technology. We investigate the effect that the mobility model has on the performance of CBR traffic and TCP traffic. We propose four different group mobility models and describe a mobility pattern generator called grcmob to be used with the ns-2 simulator. We perform a thorough evaluation of a MANET behavior using as a reference the behavior obtained with the random waypoint mobility model. We observe the high variability of the results and the need to know exactly the behavior of the system and the impossibility to define a unique proposal which is general to whatever environment. We make evident that group mobility pattern highly affects the performance of both CBR traffic and TCP traffic. Also the mix of inter- and intra-group communication has a strong impact on the MANET performance and should therefore be taken into consideration when tuning or designing MANETs protocols.","PeriodicalId":105726,"journal":{"name":"12th Euromicro Conference on Parallel, Distributed and Network-Based Processing, 2004.
