Yet, there is less attention paid to the scrutinised formulation of policies related to this aspect in Sri Lanka. Furthermore, child-related studies conducted in Sri Lanka are limited. This paper aims to contribute to this necessity by conducting a critical evaluation regarding the responsibility of the formulation of ECCD and education policies in Sri Lanka. A qualitative research design was used for this study. Thirteen policy documents related to ECCD and education were critically analysed and interviews were conducted with responsible informants of ECCD and education in order to gather data. The findings exhibited that there was no single designated authority that is responsible for the formulation of policies related to ECCD and education in Sri Lanka. Furthermore, it was noted that the responsibility of ECCD and education-related policy formulation constantly shifted from one authority to another. In addition, it was noted that the responsibility regarding the formulation of policies for different aspects of ECCD and education were delegated to different parties. Lack of coordination among these diverse parities had resulted in no clear-cut policies for any of the aspects of ECCD and education. Furthermore, lack of supervision and monitoring had resulted in the non-implementation of the prevalent ECCD and education policies in Sri Lanka. Hence, the requirement for stern and stable ECCD policy formulating and monitoring agents is highlighted in the present study.","PeriodicalId":105560,"journal":{"name":"Ousl Journal","volume":"116 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-07-24","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132990750","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The focus on student diversity is important as teachers need to be able to use classroom instruction and communication to make their classes inclusive for all learners. Yet, how can classrooms be inclusive and safe learning environments that offer all students the space to grow and reach their full potential? How can teachers design and deliver lessons so that all learners feel they belong to the school community? How can teachers help their learners appropriate pedagogical content on their own terms? These are concerns this paper attempts to answer. Focusing on English Language Teaching (ELT) material, it discusses how educational discoureses in textbooks reproduce inequalities that exist outside of the classroom and how critical discourse analysis (CDA) can be used to deconstructs texts in order to explore ways in which they relate to broader sociopolitical contexts. Drawing on selected tenets of CDA, this study discusses how they can be used as an analytical tool to critically examine the relations between discourse, power, dominance, and social inequality present in textbooks and identify ways in which educators can adapt and appropriate material in ways that help their learners to build on the cultural and linguistic capital they bring with them to the classroom.","PeriodicalId":105560,"journal":{"name":"Ousl Journal","volume":"67 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-07-24","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129510082","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The Ordinance is modelled on the English Sale of Goods Ordinance of 1893. Although the English law pertaining to sale of goods has been amended to cater to the modern-day developments, the Sri Lankan Ordinance has remained the same even after a century and more. This research is carried out following the traditional black letter approach of socio-legal research. Relevant reforms to the Sri Lankan Ordinance have been identified considering the relevant case laws and current developments in the sale of goods in Sri Lanka and globally. The analysis proves that there are many deficiencies in the Sri Lankan Ordinance when compared with the law in the United Kingdom and highlights the necessity for amendments in accordance with the latest technological developments and on the requisites of the parties engaged in the sale of goods. This research proposes new reforms and illustrates how the proposed reforms will provide solutions for the perceived deficiencies. This study mainly focuses on the nature of the selling goods, geographical limits related to sale of goods and the methods that the parties use to sell the goods. Furthermore, the study focuses on the remedies introduced to the parties involved in the sale of goods.","PeriodicalId":105560,"journal":{"name":"Ousl Journal","volume":"30 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-07-24","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125997044","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Biofilms are a cluster of bacterial cells enclosed in extra polymeric substances and irreversibly attached onto a surface. Biofilms have a major impact on public health as biofilm associated bacteria are able to survive and populate in indwelling medical devices, causing severe nosocomial and recurrent infections. Biofilm-embedded bacteria have unique characteristics which are harder to destroy than the planktonic forms. Especially biofilm bacteria are highly resistant to antimicrobial agents. Treating patients undergoing long term urinary catheterization is becoming complicated by encrustation and blockage due to crystalline biofilm formation inside the lumen of catheters. Further, all types of indwelling catheters including silver or nitrofurazone‐coated devices are vulnerable to biofilm formation. Therefore, there is an urgent requirement to develop either urinary catheters with other alternative coatings or new urinary drainage systems which may lead to reduction of infections and morbidity. Other than that, controlling biofilm formation is a necessary requirement during both manufacturing and usage of catheters. Antifouling and biocidal coatings on the catheters are currently being investigated and it is proved that herbal products also express anti-biofilm activity. This review is largely based on previous literature describing biofilm formation and their role in catheter associated urinary tract infection. Further, mechanism of biofilm formation in indwelling urinary catheters, antibiotic resistance patterns, and the detection methods of biofilm are briefly described. Understanding the mechanisms of biofilm formation and the antibiotic resistance patterns is of utmost importance which will result in the development of new remedies for biofilm infection.","PeriodicalId":105560,"journal":{"name":"Ousl Journal","volume":"11 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-07-24","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121694381","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Seven treatments were prepared by using two sources of potassium, namely Muriate of Potash (MOP) and Partially Burnt Paddy Husk (PBPH). The treatments included T1 (zero potassium fertilizer as control), T2 (recommended rate of MOP 100%), T3 (75% MOP+25% PBPH), T4 (50% MOP+50% PBPH), T5 (25% MOP+75%PBPH), T6 (PBPH alone 100%) and T7 (recommended rate of 100% MOP+50% PBPH). For treatment, the percentages of MOP and partially-burnt paddy husk were calculated based on weight basis. This experiment was laid out in a Randomized Complete Block Design with three replications. Local type of turmeric was used as planting material and data were collected on soil, growth and yield parameters of turmeric. Parameters were recorded at monthly intervals after planting. Results revealed that most of the growth and yield parameters have increased in a similar pattern (T7>T2=T3>T4>T5>T6>T1). Soil parameters also showed significant differences among the treatments due to the application of PBPH. Quality of the rhizome was evaluated based on colour intensity of the rhizome. There was no significant difference between treatments using colour intensity, except in control treatment (T1). The results obtained by the study showed that combined use of MOP (100%) with PBPH (50%) has beneficial effects on turmeric cultivation. Therefore partially- burnt paddy husk can be used as a supplementary source of K for turmeric cultivation to maximize the yield.","PeriodicalId":105560,"journal":{"name":"Ousl Journal","volume":"20 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-12-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129468763","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Current status of the stupa has a circumference of 182m (600ʹ) and a height of 22.6m (74ʹ). Presently, one side of the stupa has collapsed and some vertical cracks are visible on the east side of lower dome section of the stupa. Therefore, it is essential to carry out proper investigation on the current condition of the stupa before any major restoration work in order to reach its full height. With this objective, a series of experimental testing and numerical modeling was performed. The foundation of the stupa was assessed by using Ground Penetration Radar (GPR) method. According to the GPR measurements, the stupa spreads 2.87m away from the basal rings to a depth of 3m from the existing ground level. It is apparent from GPR data, there exists gravel type rock below 3 m level from the existing ground and stupa rests on matt gravel layer. Material properties of the ancient bricks of the stupa were evaluated with adequate laboratory testing. Test results showed that ancient bricks of Neelagiri stupa have higher capacity than those of modern bricks. Numerical analysis of the stupa was carried out using the general finite element software package SAP2000 to assess the stresses developed in the stupa due to its self-weight. The results showed that the stresses generate within the existing stupa due to its self-weight is well below than the compressive strength and the tensile strength of ancient bricks. Further, the study suggests two alternative shapes (bubble and paddy heap shapes) to complete stupa restoration. Suitable shape is proposed for restoration and the different restoration options have been analysed with respect to structural performance along with the existing conditions.","PeriodicalId":105560,"journal":{"name":"Ousl Journal","volume":"29 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-12-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133006372","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, there is rich evidence for ‘learning’ and ‘teaching’ in ancient Lanka’s folktales which treat these concepts as ‘lived experiences’ of protagonists occupying imaginary worlds. Yet, there has been minimal scholarly attention paid to folktales. This paper focuses on those folktales with the objective of locating what such story-telling tells us about the way common folks perceived education. Using a folkloristic standpoint which views folk speech acts as being carriers of not only cultural embellishments but cultural predispositions, this study attempts to locate what the notions of ‘learning’ and ‘teaching’ present in stories told by southern Lankans tell us about their deep-seated attitudes to/understandings of education. At present, disease control is achieved with chemical fungicides which are hazardous to human health and environment. As such, this research looked into the possibility of using essential oils (EOs) as biological fungicides against Lasiodiplodia sp. in mango (cv. Karuthacolomban). Pure-grade Basil oil (Ocimum basilicum), Cardamom oil (Elettaria cardamomum), Citronella oil (Cymbopogon nardus L.), Lemon oil (Citrus limon), Mustard oil (Brassica juncea) and Orange oil (Citrus sinensis) were selected for the study. The most effective EOs against Lasiodiplodia sp. under in vitro conditions selected by a poisoned food bio-assay, were used in in vivo studies. The effect of the treatment on reducing disease development, organoleptic properties and the edibility of fruits after in vivo application was assessed. Twenty-four hours after artificial inoculation, fruits were dipped in the selected concentration of the EO solutions at room temperature or at 45˚C for 3 minutes and then stored under ambient conditions. Disease development, percentage weight loss, titrable acidity and total soluble solids contents were measured and a sensory evaluation with a taste panel was also carried out for the treated fruits. Results revealed that basil, cardamom (700 μl l-1) and citronella (400 μll-1) oils significantly reduced the growth of Lasiodiplodia sp. under in vitro conditions and cardamom oil (700 μl l-1) in warm water effectively reduced the severity of SER under in vivo conditions with no effect on sensory properties or physico-chemical quality parameters. Thus, plant EOs can serve as safe, eco-friendly and effective alternatives to synthetic fungicides.","PeriodicalId":105560,"journal":{"name":"Ousl Journal","volume":"320 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-12-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123647190","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
