Traditional approaches to this problem are conservative, sometimes leaving portions of a power system without sensitive or selective back-up protection. In this paper a probabilistic model for the relay errors resulting from the variation of the infeeds is developed. Other measurement inaccuracies are also considered in order to build a probabilistic approach to setting all zones of distance relays. The developed concepts are associated with automatic tools for computer aided protection coordination and applied to the Portuguese transmission grid.","PeriodicalId":105076,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of 1996 Transmission and Distribution Conference and Exposition","volume":"58 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1996-09-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"117313504","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This survey is now finished with a total of 550 customer sites having been monitored, each for a one month period. This paper presents a detailed discussion of how data from many different sites were combined into various \"average\" power quality profiles for different customer groups, such as industrial, commercial, and residential. The reported conclusions are not always in agreement with each other. In this paper, using a modeling procedure presented in a previous work, we study the shielding effect due to mutual coupling among the conductors of a three-phase line and between the ground wires and the line conductors. The results are compared with those published by other authors, and explanations of the disagreements are given. Additionally, a simplified method to evaluate lightning-induced voltages on a multiconductor line from the values obtained for the single conductor case is presented, and a simple formula which gives the magnitude reduction of the induced voltages due to the presence of other conductors is derived. It is shown that, for the examined case, the derived simple formula gives practically the same results as those obtained using the rigorous procedure. We have also compared results obtained using the simplified formula proposed by Rusck to evaluate the protective ratio of a ground wire with our results, and we have found that the values predicted by the Rusck formula are about 6% lower than ours.","PeriodicalId":105076,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of 1996 Transmission and Distribution Conference and Exposition","volume":"359 ","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1996-09-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"120878047","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Despite this long history, the design, application and operation of these different types of conductor constructions are frequently misunderstood and confused with one another. Electric utilities have increasing needs for greater reliability and higher quality of service, growing concerns over electromagnetic fields, increased difficulty in obtaining right-of-way and tree trimming, and difficulty in maintaining clearances in congested areas. These challenges have resulted in expanded interest in using covered or insulated cables in aerial systems. This paper: (a) describes the differences between the constructions; (b) answers questions, concerns and misconceptions about these aerial designs; and (c) ranks the performance of each relative to desired attributes. A logical system for classifying covered wire and cable is also proposed.","PeriodicalId":105076,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of 1996 Transmission and Distribution Conference and Exposition","volume":"13 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1996-09-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"134120998","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Traditional load modeling techniques used for distribution power flows are designed for system peak studies, and are not suitable for providing real-time statistical load estimates. This paper presents a real-time load modeling technique which incorporates the use of customer class curves and provides a measure of the uncertainty (statistics) in the estimates. It also incorporates the possibility of multiple line flow measurements and makes use of customer billing information. The load modeling technique is combined with a probabilistic distribution circuit state estimation algorithm. Results of the combined load modeling and state estimation algorithm are provided on an actual 934-bus distribution circuit illustrating its feasibility.","PeriodicalId":105076,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of 1996 Transmission and Distribution Conference and Exposition","volume":"108 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1996-09-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"117168608","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This paper describes some of the early findings of current-cycling tests on 4000 kcmil aluminum cable connectors and defines the need for more stringent qualification test specifications. Use of the ANSI C119.4 light-duty (125 cycles) test specification revealed a strong dependency on basic parameters such as surface roughness, dimension, type and surface finish of hardware, surface preparation, mounting techniques, etc. The first batch of test samples failed dramatically at an early stage in the current and load cycling tests.
