We investigate the impact of false data injection (FDI) attacks on distributed transient stability control schemes. We consider a general formulation for data integrity attacks on energy storage system (ESS)-based control schemes. We focus on the parametric feedback linearization (PFL) transient stability control scheme, and we derive analytical expressions for the errors in rotors' speed and angle as a result of the cyber attack. The IEEE 68-bus test power system is used to numerically evaluate the impact of example attacks and to draw valuable insights.","PeriodicalId":104535,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 2nd Workshop on Cyber-Physical Security and Resilience in Smart Grids","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-04-18","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130000128","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Specifically, an energy storage system (ESS)-based control scheme that builds on feedback linearization theory is implemented in the power system to enhance its transient stability. We study the value of incorporating such ESS-based distributed control on specific transient stability metrics that include critical clearing time, critical control activation time, system stability time, rotor angle stability index, rotor speed stability index, rate of change of frequency, and control power. The stability metrics are evaluated using the IEEE 68-bus test power system. Numerical results demonstrate the value of the distributed control scheme in enhancing the transient stability metrics of power systems.","PeriodicalId":104535,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 2nd Workshop on Cyber-Physical Security and Resilience in Smart Grids","volume":"134 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-04-18","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126912854","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

While this prospect has many benefits, it also makes power systems and smart grids more vulnerable to cyber-attacks and introduces increasingly critical dependencies between the cyber and physical domain of power systems. Building on the success of its first iteration, the purpose of this workshop is to continue to be a forum for discussion on hot topics and key challenges in ensuring the security and resilience of cyber-physical smart grids. This multidisciplinary international workshop is being coorganised by three major European-funded research projects in the smart grid area, namely the SALVAGE, SEGRID and SPARKS projects. The workshop is expected to run for a full-day and include a keynote speech plus regular paper presentations. A Best Paper Award will be presented to an outstanding paper and presentation at the workshop.
