Drugs injected with this technique reach the underlying tissues at higher concentrations than those obtained with intramuscular administration. Preclinical studies have shown that drug concentration in the skin, muscles and joints underlying the injection site is higher than after intramuscular administration [24]. Furthermore, it has been demonstrated [5,6] that the production of antibody response is greater if the antigen is inoculated intradermal with respect to the intramuscular route. Some unpublished clinical results [7,8] confirm that a drug remains longer in the underlying tissues after intradermal injection (up to 2mm) than in the deeper injection (greater than 10mm). Similar results have been demonstrated in patients with the administration of human follicle stimulating hormone (rhFSH) injected at a depth of 1-2mm compared to the deeper administration (10-13mm) [9]. These data suggest that the skin constitutes a “deposit” that modulates the spread of drugs in the underlying tissues with the potential advantages of a lower dose requirement and a lower risk of systemic interactions [1]. Furthermore, the microtrauma induced by the needle and distension of the skin tissues due to the injected liquid would stimulate the reactions of the reflex nerves with an activation of the gate control [10]. Also, the chemical-physical properties of the injected liquid can induce some local reactions [11,12]. Finally, a glial dermal network able to actively participate in the regulation of local pain, could be involved [13]. All these data suggest that intradermal therapy is the result of a series of “meso-dermal reactions” partly due to the pharmacological effect but enhanced by other intradermal mechanisms.","PeriodicalId":104100,"journal":{"name":"Research & Investigations in Sports Medicine","volume":"2 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-11-12","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126527394","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The risk of AF in athletes is fivefold higher than in their sedentary counterparts and people having only regular moderate physical activity. The risk is higher in endurance athletes, particularly in cyclists (OR 14.4%). Structural heart disease is observed in 40% of athletes with AF. The risk of lonely AF is higher in men. Women still represent a minority of participants in endurance sports and their risk is difficult to estimate. Available data show that that prolonged endurance exercise may also cause AF among athletic women [3,4]. Recent studies show that women seem to be affected by atrial fibrillation, less than male counterpart [5]. AF is also the most common arrhythmia in the general population, occurring in 1% of it [6]. However, it is rarely the cause of death compared to other arrhythmias found in athletes such as commotio cordis [7]. Other risk factors of AF in athletes comprise age, exercise intensity and above all – exercise duration. A threshold for the increased risk of AF is 1500 hours of exercise per life. Atrial volume is a strong predictor of AF (athletes with AF have a larger left atrial volume than those without) in older athletes (39±9 years old) and in veterans [3,4,8,9].","PeriodicalId":104100,"journal":{"name":"Research & Investigations in Sports Medicine","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-10-24","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123146559","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Rhythm and heart rate disturbances, high QRS voltage, ST segment elevation in the so called “early repolarization,” vagotonic or high T wave voltages, first degree AV block, incomplete right bundle branch block (RBBB) are the most common findings. Sinus bradycardia is the most frequent adaptation [2]. A detailed description of the athlete’s heart adaptation to effort and most common ECG changes at athletes can be found in numerous papers in the second half of the 20th century [3-5] and an extensive description of athletes’ heart ECG is out of the scope of the present chapter. An excellent review of the present interpretation of ECG in athletes and practical recommendations for physicians has been recently published by a recognized group of international experts [6].","PeriodicalId":104100,"journal":{"name":"Research & Investigations in Sports Medicine","volume":"25 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-10-24","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121303180","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Commotio cordis is a primary arrhythmic event that occurs when the mechanical energy generated by a blow is confined to a small area of the precordium and profoundly alters the electrical stability of the myocardium, resulting in ventricular fibrillation [2]. It is most commonly associated with a sports-related injury, wherein, there is a high-velocity impact between a projectile and the precordium. By virtue of this impact, malignant arrhythmias consequently develop leading to the individual’s immediate demise, accompanied by a relatively normal post-mortem analysis [3]. The timing of the blow causes a CC is also important, which must occur during an electrically vulnerable period within a narrow window of 10 to 20msec on the upstroke of the T wave, just before its peak (accounting for only 1% of the cardiac cycle) [4]. Baseball, softball, hockey and football a four most often sport activities competitive as well recreational in which CC appears [4]. Performance requirements are more strenuous for professional athletes who must strive to stay fit and healthy and are therefore constantly monitored by teams of doctors. These doctors are responsible for achieving two seemingly paradoxical goals: Allowing athletes to improve their performance as much as possible while maintaining their health and wellbeing. Therefore, athletes under medical supervision will aim to reach their full potential in optimizing their performance level within the constraints created by their physical and mental health. However, some athletes choose to ignore those constraints and might resort to both longand short-term solution that can significantly impair their health. These include overtraining and/or doping.","PeriodicalId":104100,"journal":{"name":"Research & Investigations in Sports Medicine","volume":"63 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-10-11","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127217778","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Sports are intended to provide individuals with many positive physical health benefits, as well as emotional and social benefits, but the risk of injury produces unwanted negative effects. Injury is a serious concern for all agesfrom children just starting to professionals, and all ages in between. The number of female athletes involved in sports has increased following Title IX, but the injury rates in females have also increased dramatically. According to the National Federation of State High School Associations, participation in high school girls’ sports has increased from 294,000 in 1971 to nearly 3.2 million in 2011 [4]. Female athletes are injured more than their male counterparts – as much as two to six times more depending on the sport [5]. While it is impossible to completely eliminate athletic injuries, one can look at measures to predict future injury occurrences. Being able to predict injuries would allow for better prevention strategies, reducing the negative effects athletes experience as a result of sports.","PeriodicalId":104100,"journal":{"name":"Research & Investigations in Sports Medicine","volume":"46 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-10-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133916557","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
