The integration of communication protocols with different delivery policies has not been addressed in past research on group communication. This integration cannot be considered as concatenation of protocols and needs delivery policies to be redefined in the context of multi-channel communication. Our paper deals with this issue. We define communication channels as software connectors of the communication level for coordinated group communication. We cover the three standard delivery policies (FIFO order, causal order, and total order).","PeriodicalId":103999,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the Fifth Mexican International Conference in Computer Science, 2004. This task requires the manipulator to move as smooth as possible. The environment where the manipulator works must be free from airborne particles that are able to damage the production of very integrated electronic circuits. Poor mechanical interactions, resulting from rough and jerky motions, ease the production of these destructive micro particles. There are some strategies providing the very necessary smooth motions: by means of trajectory planning or by means of mechanical design. The paper focuses in finding the near optimal design taking in account the link length ratio. Due to the huge search space, it is necessary the use of an intelligent, robust and suitable method. A genetic based search technique has proved a suitable performance in finding the best manipulator for the mentioned task.","PeriodicalId":103999,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the Fifth Mexican International Conference in Computer Science, 2004. Current search engines retrieve relevant documents to general - often short - user queries, but fail extracting answers to simple factual questions in natural language. This work presents the basis of a statistical question answering system capable to find answers to factual questions in Spanish language from the Web. This approach is supported on data redundancy rather than on sophisticated linguistic analyses of either questions and candidate answers. Preliminary results show that it is feasible to find concise and accurate answers from the Web to factual questions made in Spanish language. The study also concludes that the available Spanish documents in the Web are redundant enough in order to apply statistical methods like those described in this document in order to provide better mechanisms for information access.","PeriodicalId":103999,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the Fifth Mexican International Conference in Computer Science, 2004. Differential evolution is a relatively recent evolutionary algorithm that has been found to be very robust as a search engine for real parameter optimization. Adding different knowledge sources to the variation operator of differential evolution it is possible to improve the search and reduce the computational cost necessary to approximate the global optima of different problems. The proposed technique is validated using a set of well-known constrained optimization problems commonly adopted in the specialized literature. The approach is compared with respect to two techniques that are representative of the state-of-the-art in the area.","PeriodicalId":103999,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the Fifth Mexican International Conference in Computer Science, 2004. A due interval is a generalization of the classical due date and describes a time interval, in which a job should be finished. In the first problem we minimize the sum of the total tardiness, total earliness and due interval size. In the second problem, we minimize the weighted maximum of the following three parts: maximum tardiness, maximum earliness and due interval size. We proved that the considered problems are equivalent to the strong NP-hard classical scheduling problem with the parallel processors subject to the minimization of the makespan criterion.","PeriodicalId":103999,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the Fifth Mexican International Conference in Computer Science, 2004. The behaviors, which include finding ball, approaching ball, finding goal, approaching goal, shooting and avoiding, have been designed and implemented using a robust layered control system. The avoiding behavior was learned using the C4.5 decision tree algorithm, the rest of the behaviors were programmed by hand. We describe the vision system employed by a mobile robot. Additionally, we compare two pixel classification techniques. One technique is based on the fast and cheap color image segmentation for interactive robots and the other one is based on the artificial life paradigm. We describe experimental results obtained using a Pioneer 2-DX robot equipped with a single camera, playing on an enclosed soccer field with forward role.","PeriodicalId":103999,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the Fifth Mexican International Conference in Computer Science, 2004. For example, maintainers must know what changes should do to the software, where to do those changes and how those changes can affect other modules of the system. Frequently, they do not have enough knowledge to make the best decision and must consult other information sources, but these sources are often unknown or difficult to locate. Therefore, knowledge management could be useful to address some of these problems; however, before knowledge management tools could be developed for software maintenance groups, some questions must be answered: such as what kinds of problems could be solved. In this paper, a qualitative approach to the identification of knowledge management needs in software maintenance teams is presented. This approach has been applied in two case studies, and an agent-based knowledge management tool has been designed and implemented from the results obtained.","PeriodicalId":103999,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the Fifth Mexican International Conference in Computer Science, 2004. We posit that as digital publications become the norm, the organization of publishing entities is expected to evolve and to differ significantly from current print-oriented publishers. Our major goal is to support the entire digital publishing process, which may vary from DPO to DPO. Distinctive features of our design include facilities for users to define the structure, participants and genres handled by DPOs, as well as tools to support the processes involved in authoring, reviewing, publishing and using digital materials.","PeriodicalId":103999,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the Fifth Mexican International Conference in Computer Science, 2004. A virtual visit can benefit both tourists and scientists. We show how the model was created and how certain technical issues were addressed. The application runs interactively over a modem-based connection. It first displays primary visual clues and refines the details later. A data prefetcher loads the potentially visible data in advance. The system loads data from the neighborhood by which the user passes using the VRML proximity sensors. In such a way it loads the local neighborhood of the location of the visitor in advance. The application is context-sensitive and can display additional textual and image information.","PeriodicalId":103999,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the Fifth Mexican International Conference in Computer Science, 2004.
