The aim of our study was to identify the most common skin disorders in 22 dogs (15 females and six males, mean age = 10 years) that were referred to a Veterinary School Hospital in São Paulo, SP, within a 24-month period, presenting pituitary-dependent or adrenal-dependent hyperadrenocorticism. Cutaneous injuries were identified in 72.72% of cases. The most frequent changes were related to the presence of meliceric crusting, hair loss, erythema, comedo, epidermal collarette, hyperpigmentation, scales, pustules and papules. The dermatological diseases related with hypercortisolism were pyodermitis, demodicosis and calcinosis cutis.","PeriodicalId":10255,"journal":{"name":"Clínica Veterinária","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-03-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"86500730","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Female canines are most frequently affected. This study aimed to characterize epidemiological and microbiological aspects of patients and their isolated urinary pathogens through analysis of 836 urine cultures of 462 dogs collected over a nine-year period (2006-2014). Cultures were segregated according to patient history (single or recurrent urinary tract infections). Results suggest that etiological distribution patterns of canine urinary tract infections change according to development time, and that mongrel dogs between 11 and 15 years old are the most affected.","PeriodicalId":10255,"journal":{"name":"Clínica Veterinária","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"75165130","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This study reports the case of a male Rottweiler presenting a three-month history of extraskeletal osteosarcoma in the thyroid gland. Neck radiography was performed to assess tumor extension, as well as chest and abdominal ultrasonography, which were negative for metastasis. Aspiration cytology of tumor material was suggestive of osteosarcoma. After 25 days, the patient underwent total thyroidectomy, but passed away after surgery completion due to cardiorespiratory complications. Necropsy confirmed the presence of nodules in the pleura and lung that were consistent with metastasis. Histopathological examination later confirmed the diagnosis of a rare case of cancer in dogs","PeriodicalId":10255,"journal":{"name":"Clínica Veterinária","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"79897490","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Its recognition is important, since spontaneous resolution is rare an untreated animals can die. It is probably an immune-mediated disorder, characterized by sudden onset of skin lesions on the face, ear and submandibular lymphadenomegaly. This article presents a literature review and two case reports of JC: a two-month-old female dachshund and a fifty-day male pointer, both with alopecia, edema, crusting, papules and pustules in the face, blepharitis, enlarged lymph nodes and genital edema. Treatment was based on the administration of prednisone and cephalexin. Soon after treatment onset, the dachshund began to present otitis and the pointer, tetraparesis and bacterial folliculitis. There was remission of signs three weeks and seven weeks after therapy onset, but scars remained. The recognition of the disease enables the use of immunosuppressants that, if instituted early, improve the prognosis.","PeriodicalId":10255,"journal":{"name":"Clínica Veterinária","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"91552540","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In domestic cats, anxiety or stress can also generate excessive licking of the coat and, in this species, pheromones have been used to reduce stress and treat compulsive behavior. The aim of this study is to report the use of pheromone therapy (fraction F3 of the feline facial pheromone) in a group of five margay cats (Leopardus wiedii) kept at Sorocaba Zoo that were diagnosed with psychogenic dermatitis. The pheromone was sprayed at the rooms that held the five individuals for 60 days. After treatment, four of the five animals showed full recovery, which suggests that pheromone therapy is a useful fool to treat psychogenic dermatitis in margay cats.","PeriodicalId":10255,"journal":{"name":"Clínica Veterinária","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"88369718","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Several clinical and surgical treatments have been described, ranging from acupuncture and confinement to the use of anti-inflammatory, analgesic and muscle relaxant drugs, as well as the employment of varied surgical decompression techniques. The partial thoracolumbar lateral corpectomy is an alternative and effective surgical technique to treat chronic and acute thoracolumbar disk disease. It allows adequate access to the floor of the spinal canal for removal of disc material with minimal handling of the spinal cord, allowing wide and effective decompression. This review deals with anatomical, surgical and biomechanical aspects of this technique, and discusses its indications, advantages and disadvantages.","PeriodicalId":10255,"journal":{"name":"Clínica Veterinária","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"76935481","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
