Affected animals are generally middle-aged or older, except those that develop osteochondromas. Clinical signs are consistent with upper airway obstruction, most often including cough, intolerance to exercise, breathing difficulty and cyanosis. Diagnosis is usually achieved with a simple radiographic evaluation, while the tracheoscopy allows direct visualization and sampling of the lesion. Neoplastic lesions should be differentiated from other structures such as foreign bodies and polyps. This article reports the case of a 15-year-old female German Shepherd that had a one-year history of progressive dyspnea and cough. Survey radiography helped disclose a mass, but the definite diagnosis was achieved by means of a tracheoscopy followed by biopsy and histopathological exam of the tumor.","PeriodicalId":10255,"journal":{"name":"Clínica Veterinária","volume":"18 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-05-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"75113787","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The aim of the acupuncture is to achieve a homeostatic effect, restoring the balance of altered organic functions. Pharmacopuncture has been used to produce sedation in dogs. The Yin Tang acupoint is a sedation point located between the eyebrows that produces sedation in humans and animals upon stimulation. Several studies have shown that administration of a subdose of acepromazine and xylazine in this acupoint effectively induces sedation in dogs comparable to that of the therapeutic dose administered by conventional means, without causing serios side effects. We hereby suggest that new drugs should be testes with this technique for the clinical practice in animals.","PeriodicalId":10255,"journal":{"name":"Clínica Veterinária","volume":"70 5 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-05-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"83429293","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Twelve establishments that trade animals or food were visually inspected and the respective owners were requested to fill in a questionnaire. It was found that birds are the most commercialized group (77%) in these establishments, followed by rabbits (55.5%), rodents (55.5%) and black-bellied sliders (44.4%). These animals were acquired from legalized of informal breeders and a quarantine was not usually performed. Regarding the feed, these establishments indicated seed mixtures to feed birds (91.7%) and rodents (83.3%), and pelleted feed for rabbits (91.6%) and reptiles (66.6%). These supplies were acquired either in suitable containers or in bulk. Knowledge about the maintenance of these species is still not widespread, evincing the need for employee training by veterinarians.","PeriodicalId":10255,"journal":{"name":"Clínica Veterinária","volume":"13 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-05-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"79546937","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

While dogs and various wild species serve as reservoirs of the protozoan, domestic and wild cats can also be infected. The number of diagnosed cases of feline leishmaniasis has recently grown in endemic areas, suggesting that this species can no longer be considered an unusual host of Leishmania sp. There was a great advance in laboratory techniques in recent years, which may have contributed to increasing the number of positive diagnoses. Thus, it is necessary to understand the real role of the cat in the epidemiology of the disease and clarify whether this species can behave like a protozoan reservoir. The purpose of this review is to gather important information about the disease in domestic cats, such as epidemiology, clinical signs and diagnosis.","PeriodicalId":10255,"journal":{"name":"Clínica Veterinária","volume":"9 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-05-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"84824855","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Metastases occur by hematogenous or lymphatic routes. The extragenital form is rare and the cutaneous form is reported to be a warty proliferative lesion of ulcerated and friable surface, which usually presents itself concomitantly to the genital form of the disease. We hereby report a case of subcutaneous TVT in a mixed-breed neutered female, in order to contribute clinical and cytopathological data, as well as prognosis, due to unusual presentation of this neoplasm. The formation was disseminated as multiple nodule located on the inner face of the hind limbs. Diagnosis was achieved by cytological examination, which revealed the presence of round cells with predominantly eccentric nuclei, loose chromatin and large and intensely vacuolated cytoplasm, features of plasmacytoid TVT. Four courses of chemotherapy with vincristine sulfate were conducted, yielding complete remission of the tumor. The subcutaneous appearance of TVT is unusual, especially when no genital lesions that might suggest metastasis are found.","PeriodicalId":10255,"journal":{"name":"Clínica Veterinária","volume":"38 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-05-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"74676246","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The introduction of direct and indirect digital radiographic systems in the routine of many hospitals and image laboratories has turned the use of post-processing tools more frequent and important. Thus, the need of knowledge about these resources motivated this literature review, which aims to contribute in a simple way to the understanding of the physics involved in the acquisition of computerized radiographic images. Additionally, we hereby present the research evolution to validade the use of digital images for thoracic evaluation and the contribution of post-processing to clinical applications and diagnosis.","PeriodicalId":10255,"journal":{"name":"Clínica Veterinária","volume":"112 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-05-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"81650337","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, according to the literature and to routine clinics and hospitals, young animals ingest foreign bodies more commonly than adults. In addition to vomiting, anorexia, depression and abdominal pain may also be present. Radiography is a complementary test method that is most often helpful in diagnosing the presence of these objects. A gastrostomy is indicated when removal of the foreign body cannot be achieved. Lead is a toxic metal that is extremely harmful when absorbed by the body. This work reports the case of a mongrel bitch that ingested large amount of lead parts used as weight in angling. The patient underwent surgery for removal of the foreign material, and failed to show symptoms of heavy metal poisoning.","PeriodicalId":10255,"journal":{"name":"Clínica Veterinária","volume":"1 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-03-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"85034757","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Regarding the degree of spinal stability, 33 animals had unstable fractures and five had stable fractures. Radiographic examination scored 100 diagnostic sensitivity. However, a significant portion of animals with trans-surgical vertebral lesions were not diagnosed on conventional radiographs. There was a statistically significant difference in terms of the degree of vertebral displacement, neurological dysfunction and response to therapy, when comparing 0-25% with 76-100% vertebral displacement. Radiographic examination was sufficient to diagnose vertebral fractures and luxations, but did not allow visualization of all bone changes.","PeriodicalId":10255,"journal":{"name":"Clínica Veterinária","volume":"3 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-03-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"89723058","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Papillomatosis is considered to be a low-frequency disease in dogs and is characterized by the presence of single or multiple lesions in the oral cavity, subcutaneous tissue, or ocular region. The oral and facial exophytic forms are the most common presentations in dogs, although cutaneous inverted papillomas are rare. The latter occur in the ventral abdomen and groin of dogs under three years of age, and are typically high with a central pore. Because inverted papillomas do not regress spontaneously, the treatment of choice is surgical removal. Studies have shown that cats suffer from two main types of malicious acts: intentional poisoning by pesticides and traumatic lesions; the latter may be of accidental or non-accidental nature. The most frequently observed traumas in veterinary medicine are of mechanical order and can be caused by various instruments. Between 1998 and 2012, 90 victims of traumatic lesions were necropsied by the Animal Pathology Service of FMVZ-USP. Among these, 41.1% were female and 27.8% were male; gender information was not available for the remainder 31%. 67.8% of the animals were from blunt force trauma; in 36.7%, from stab wounds, in 3.3%, from incised-stab wounds and in 5.6% from other types of injuries. In recent years, the demand for animal necropsies with forensic purposes has increased, and careful examination of the trauma is key to elucidating cases concerning suspicion of animal abuse.","PeriodicalId":10255,"journal":{"name":"Clínica Veterinária","volume":"64 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-03-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"77014105","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
