It still has a controversial etiology and treatment in veterinary medicine. Many professionals find difficulties in to diagnose and chose the surgical procedure to be adopted. In Brazil, the treatment approach using corrective osteotomies is increasing, and Tibial Plateau Leveling Osteotomy (TPLO) is one of the techniques most widely used by professional. The objective of this study was to review the most important issues associated to the rupture of the cranial cruciate ligament, and to describe the technical principles behind the use of correcting tibial plateau angle, and surgical technique of TPLO. The surgical procedure is directly associated to the success or failure of treatment, and the importance of the postoperative complications must be taken into consideration.","PeriodicalId":10255,"journal":{"name":"Clínica Veterinária","volume":"34 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-09-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"86086413","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The ubiquitous presence of sand flies is a major player in the high incidence of leishmaniasis in urban areas of Brazil. Prevention and control or canine leishmaniasis is important to decrease the incidence of the zoonosis. Control is done with topical use of products with antiparasitic, repellent and insecticide action. This study evaluated the repellent efficacy of line-on application of a topical permethrin-dinotefuran-pyriproxyfen formulation in dogs. Six dogs were treated with the product and six did not receive treatment. All dogs were sedated and exposed to sand flies of the species Lutzomyia longipalpis weekly for 28 days. The result showed that the product had an efficacy of 90.4% in repelling sand flies. There was statistical significance (p ≤ 0,05) difference in the number (mean) of live engorged sand fly females between the two groups in all evaluations. The product showed repellent efficacy against Lutzomyia longipalpis for 28 days.","PeriodicalId":10255,"journal":{"name":"Clínica Veterinária","volume":"41 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-09-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"75812849","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This study evaluated the effects of oclacitinib on pruritus scores of 20 dogs with atopic dermatitis. Levels of pruritus described by owners were diagnosed based on strict exclusion criteria, at 3 moments (days 0, 14 an 28), by quantitative and qualitative scales. In 85% of the dogs, oral administration of 0.4 - 0.6 mg/kg twice daily resulted in more than 50% reduction in pruritus level. The same dose once daily reduced pruritus in 80% of animals, being 44% the average reduction. None of them presented adverse reactions during the 28 days of evaluation. Oclacitinib has shown efficiency in the treatment of dogs with atopic dermatitis, with high rates of pruritus reduction in both dosages, especially when used every 12 hours.","PeriodicalId":10255,"journal":{"name":"Clínica Veterinária","volume":"48 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-07-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"88412342","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The study of origin and distribution of the nerves that form the brachial plexus of primates contributes to the body of knowledge of veterinary functional anatomy, and can have important ramifications to clinical, surgical, and anesthetic procedures, as well as to the understanding of injuries in these species. We found that the brachial plexus of Sapajus libidinosus is composed of neural fibers originating from the union of the dorsal and ventral roots of the cervical vertebral segments C5 to C8 and thoracic T1. These fibers then are organized in four main trunks, with a subdivision in the middle trunk. We concluded that the origins, trajectories and territory of innervation of the nerve trunks of the brachial plexus of Sapajus libidinosus are similar to those of other primates, with some variations occurring in the course.","PeriodicalId":10255,"journal":{"name":"Clínica Veterinária","volume":"30 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-07-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"89906765","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Spinal cord injury triggers a sequence of vascular, biochemical and inflammatory events that result in the development of secondary tissue lesions. The secondary injury leads to progressive destruction of neuronal tissue with frequently irreversible consequences to the patient's motor and sensory functions. Studies have increased the understand of the mechanisms of spinal cord injury. But despite decades of research aiming at funcional recovery and improved quality of life of patients, treatment for this condition is still frustrating. This article compiles academic information on pathophysiology and main therapeutic approaches for spinal cord injury.","PeriodicalId":10255,"journal":{"name":"Clínica Veterinária","volume":"28 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-07-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"88015505","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

These deformities are more commonly seen in the radius and ulna of dogs. The leading cause is local trauma to the distal growth plates of these bones, resulting in interruption of ulnar growth with continued radius growth. Corrective osteotomies with adequate bone fixation are relatively complex but highly successful techniques in the treatment of angular and rotational deviations. This review highlights the importance of surgical planning using the angular rotation center (Cora) methodology in the treatment of angular deformities. Main techniques of corrective osteotomies are reviewed.","PeriodicalId":10255,"journal":{"name":"Clínica Veterinária","volume":"99 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-07-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"81202055","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It is a type 2 hypersensitivity reaction in which erythrocytes are covered by antibodies or complement and are phagocytized in the spleen or lysed within the blood vessels. It is considered of primary origin when the causes of the onset of the disease are unknown, or regarded as secondary when resulting from external antigens. The diagnosis may be therapeutic or based on the direct positive Coombs test in conjunction with laboratory findings, such as moderate to severe variable regeneration anemia, polychromasia, spherocytosis, red blood cell agglutination, hyperbilirubinemia, and hemoglobinuria. Treatment is based on immunosuppressive doses of steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs such as prednisone. This paper reports the case of an acute onset in a dog diagnosed with primary immune-mediated hemolytic anemia, presenting apathy, dyspnea, pain upon abdominal palpation, splenomegaly and pale mucous membranes. Coombs direct test was positive. Treatment started with prednisone, but as the response was not favorable, other drugs were associated to it. Evolution was unfavorable and the owner opted for euthanasia due to poor prognosis.","PeriodicalId":10255,"journal":{"name":"Clínica Veterinária","volume":"29 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-05-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"87665639","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This article reports a case of acute clinical cholangiocarcinoma in a three-year-old Labrador Retriever bitch. The animal had a clinical history of emesis and hyporexia. Physical and laboratory examinations disclosed hyperthermia, jaundice, hypoglycemia, leukocytosis, anemia, thrombocytopenia and coagulopathy. Abdominal ultrasound revealed an enlarged liver of heterogeneous echotexture with hyperechoic and hypoechoic irregular areas. The animal developed severe hemolysis and came to die. Necropsy revealed hepatomegaly and irregular appearance of the liver; metastasis were found in the bone marrow, kidneys and spleen, and neoplastic pulmonary embolism was also observed. Cholangiocarcinoma was identified microscopically. The aim of this report was to describe an atypical case of cholangiocarcinoma because of the precocity of its occurrence.","PeriodicalId":10255,"journal":{"name":"Clínica Veterinária","volume":"20 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-05-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"90797299","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It is characterized by hyperextension of tibiotarsal joint, as well as by difficulty in flexing the affected limb. In some cases it can also affect the knee joint. Treatment choice and prognosis are critically dependent on early diagnosis, which increases favorable results. A Yorkshire Terrier pup and a Schnauzer pup with locomotion deficiency in the pelvic limbs were diagnosed with tibiotarsal joing hyperextension. Conservative treatment with passive and active physiotherapy and bandages was started, and provided good functional recovery without the need of surgical intervention.","PeriodicalId":10255,"journal":{"name":"Clínica Veterinária","volume":"23 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-05-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"84991351","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Since the animal presented a lesion in the distal third of the tail and had been refractory to different treatments, caudal amputation was the elected approach. Sterile tissue samples were seeded in Sabouraud agar with glucose and inhibitors, 8% ovine blood agar and McConkey agar (AMc), and incubated at 37 ºC. Under these conditions, white opaque fungal colonies with light brown pigmentation on the underside developed. Microscopically, the genus Chrysosporium was identified by the observation of septate, straight, irregularly branched hyphae with smooth surface and globose conidia. Histological findings included loss of epithelial continuity with infiltration of granulocytes and the presence of the saprophytic organism. In the dermis, granulomatous lesion with scarce fibroblastic and angioblastic reactions were observed.","PeriodicalId":10255,"journal":{"name":"Clínica Veterinária","volume":"78 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-03-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"83902809","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
