Tumor development and progression may be affected by hypermethylation of promoter regions of certain genes. Secreted Frizzled-Related Proteins (SFRPs) genes produce Wnt signaling antagonists, and their epigenetic silencing has been detected in multiple types of leukaemia. While epigenetic silencing has been broadly reported for SFRPs, SFRP2 is a family member less studied in leukaemia. ObjectivesTo evaluate SFRP2 gene methylation patterns in CML patients compared with healthy individuals. Materials and MethodsSodium bisulfite was applied to the extracted DNA from blood samples of 75 CML patients and 25 healthy subjects who served as the control group. The DNA was then analyzed by methylation-specific high-resolution melting (MS-HRM) using specific primers for the SFRP2 gene in promoter sequence. ResultsForty-five out of 75 CML patients investigated were shown to have SFRP2 methylation percentages between 50% to 100%, whereas 19 out of 25 healthy subjects had a methylation level of less than 50%. ConclusionThe current study demonstrated that SFRP2 promoter hypermethylation exists in CML, as in several other solid tumours. Hence, methylation of this gene may play a part in initiating leukemogenesis.","PeriodicalId":102216,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Sulaimani Medical College","volume":"11 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-09-21","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"139338165","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Newborn morbidity and mortality are the possible consequences of inappropriate treatment and a delay in the diagnosis of neonatal jaundice. Consequently, awareness and health-seeking activities of mothers are critical in determining the fate of this hazard. ObjectivesTo determine the level of information and attitude of mothers in the Raparin Administration toward neonatal jaundice management. Materials and MethodsA Cross-sectional study was conducted in Raparin Administration Teaching Hospitals for Maternity and Children. A non-probability / convenient sampling technique was used for the selection of 208 mothers who have a neonate with jaundice. The data were collected through structured interviews with mothers, using a specially designed questionnaire, from May 2022 to July 2022. A Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS v.27) was used for statistical analysis. ResultsThe results of the study show that the majority of mothers were in the age group 25-33 years, the percentage of those mothers who have graduated from universities was 26.9% and 78.4% of them were living in urban areas, followed by 90.4% of mothers were unemployed and 71.6% have delivered their babies through cesarean section. 61.5% of the neonate’s study sample were male. The percentage of neonates’ blood group O+ is 39.4%. about (54.3) had been fed their babies through breastfeeding. Another major finding revealed that 57.2% of mothers had good information followed by 48.1% of them also had a good attitude regarding neonatal jaundice management. The mean scores of mothers’ information and attitude are 2.45 and 2.34 respectively both mean scores are in the good area on their spectrum, also revealing that there are significant relationships between mothers’ information and their demographic features (level of education and mother occupation) at p-value < 0.02 and < 0.01 respectively. ConclusionMothers had good information and attitudes regarding neonatal jaundice management. Mothers’ information significantly relates to their occupation and level of education. And also, a non-significantly relationship with their age, and residential places. Mothers’ attitudes significantly relationships with their age, educational level, residency, and mothers’ occupation. It is recommended that mothers should be given further health education during antenatal visits regarding neonatal jaundice management to improve their information and attitudes.","PeriodicalId":102216,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Sulaimani Medical College","volume":"36 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-09-21","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"139337863","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

DNA methylation in gene promoters influences disease development, therapeutic response, and clinical outcome in various diseases. ObjectivesThis study aimed to investigate the methylation pattern in promoter regions of the runt-related transcription factor 3 (RUNX3) gene and its effect on the response to imatinib therapy, among CML patients. Patients and MethodsBlood samples were collected from 100 participants from November 2020 to February 2022, in two groups 75 samples of CML patients and 25 samples of healthy controls, genomic DNA was extracted from the samples by using the salting-out method, then Isolated DNA was treated with sodium bisulfite. By Methylation-Sensitive High-Resolution Melting (MS-HRM), the samples were analyzed. ResultsThe promoter sequence methylation level is significantly higher (P<0.05) in DNA samples from CML patients than in the control group, the methylation level in most of the healthy control samples 96% was detected between 0-24% while in CML patients was 16%, in 25-49%, RUNX3 methylation levels in Health individuals were 4%, moreover in CML patients were 24% also, in 50-100% of methylation level, health control was 0%, in CML patient showed 60%. According to methylation detection of RUNX3 among Imatinib resistance and good response, the results of IM resistance were detected between 0-40% was 15.21%, Furthermore, in good response was 79.31%. In other hand at 41-100% RUNX3 methylation levels in IM resistance was 84.78%, while a good response was recorded at 20.68%. ConclusionThe study concluded that RUNX3 gene hypermethylation often occurs in CML patients. Additionally, there is a strong correlation between RUNX3 hypermethylation and poor imatinib respondents. We found that both IM resistance and CML patients have higher levels of RUNX3 gene hypermethylation. Moreover, research on a larger sample size is required to validate these findings, which may serve as possible indicators of disease progression and imatinib resistance.","PeriodicalId":102216,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Sulaimani Medical College","volume":"2010 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-09-21","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"139338013","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Approximately 1 billion individuals around the globe are vitamin D deficient (<20ng/ml), and half of the population is insufficient (20-29ng/ml). According to extensive epidemiological studies, vitamin D deficiency is common in women, particularly pregnant and nursing mothers. Vitamin D deficiency during pregnancy is associated with various maternal and fetal health effects. ObjectivesVitamin D levels in fetuses and newborns are directly related to their mothers’ levels during pregnancy. The study aims to assess and compare the vitamin D levels of mothers and their newborn babies. Additionally, we are interested in determining whether there is a link between vitamin D levels and delivery outcomes. Patients and MethodsOne hundred pairs of mothers and newborns enrolled in a cross-sectional study at Maternity Teaching Hospital in Sulaimani. Any newborn baby diagnosed with a congenital abnormality during pregnancy was excluded. Also, any mother that was on anticonvulsant drugs was excluded. Blood samples for vitamin D analysis were taken from the mothers and newborns at birth. In addition, the demographic and medical data of the mothers and newborns were recorded. All evaluations had a p-value of 0.05 as the threshold for statistical significance. ResultsThe mothers’ and newborns’ mean vitamin D were 17.2±13.33 ng/ml and 10.48±9.77 ng/ml, respectively. An examination of the data using statistical methods indicated a connection between the vitamin D found in mothers and the levels found in their newborns (p-value=0.001). Furthermore, higher levels during pregnancy were linked to better Apgar scores (≥7) for their newborn children (p-value=0.03). Maternal vitamin D level was not statistically associated with other birth outcomes; p-value > 0.05.  ConclusionThe results of this study show that vitamin D deficiency in mothers leads to deficiency in their newborns. Except for the Apgar score, no statistically significant relationship was found between maternal vitamin D levels and other birth outcomes.","PeriodicalId":102216,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Sulaimani Medical College","volume":"30 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-06-21","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"139369106","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

ObjectivesTo determine the clinicopathological factors affecting the survival of oesophagal cancer. Patients and MethodsThis cross-sectional study was conducted retrospectively on 97 patients with oesophagal cancer in a single radiotherapy cancer centre in Sulaimaniyah City, Kurdistan region of Iraq, from 2010 to 2021. ResultsThe mean age of the patients was 68.4 ± 12.2, ranging from 29 to 90 years old. The major histology was squamous cell carcinoma (89%), and pathological grade II disease was more prevalent (53%). Males and females were equally affected (50% for each gender). At presentation, a larger number of the patients were located in the lower (N=30) and mid (N=29) oesophagus. Stage III was the most common presenting stage (45.7%). The median follow-up time was 14 months. The 12-month and 18-month survival rates were 58.6% and 34.6%, respectively. There was a significantly better survival outcome for patients with grade 1 disease than higher grades, especially grade 2 (p value= 0.01). Chemoradiation showed significantly improved survival benefits compared with RT alone (p value= 0.03) and tri-modality therapy. ConclusionThe most significant factors affecting 18-month actual survival in oesophagal cancer are tumour biology characteristics, especially low tumour grade, and chemoradiotherapy without surgery.","PeriodicalId":102216,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Sulaimani Medical College","volume":"47 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-06-21","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"139369098","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

ObjectivesThe aim was to obtain local data on the demographic features of pediatric patients with ALL and correlate them with a five-year survival rate. Patients and MethodsA retrospective cohort study was performed on 94 ALL pediatric patients aged 1-14 admitted to the Hiwa Hospital from 2014 to 2016. The diagnostic methods, clinical features, and histological and biochemical parameters were reviewed. Further, a five-year survival rate was assessed. ResultsThe mean±SD (standard deviation) of patients’ ages at diagnosis was 5.2±3.1 years, ranging from 1 to 14. Males were 57.4%, and females were 42.6%, with a male-to-female ratio of (1.35:1). Most patients (61.7%) suffered from the low-risk (A), and the majority of patients (90.4%) were in remission. The five-year survival rate was 80.9%. The associations of age groups, gender, white blood cell (WBC) groups, risk groups, and post-induction status with a five-year survival rate were insignificant (p-values of >.05). The association of immunophenotyping with the five-year survival rate was statistically significant (p-value = .014). ConclusionThe 5-year survival rate was 80.9% in the current study. Usually, troponins are regarded gold standard for detecting cardiovascular complications. In addition, studies have confirmed a difference between men and women regarding cardiovascular and renal diseases. Objectives To investigate the relation between troponins (Hs-TnT) and biomarkers, including sex hormone binding globulin (SHBG), estradiol, total and free testosterone, ferritin, Albumin, CRP and estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) in hemodialysis. Patients and MethodsSixty-one hemodialysis patients were enrolled in this study. Hs-cTnT, cTnI, total testosterone, free testosterone, SHBG, estradiol, Albumin, CRP, ferritin, urea and creatinine were estimated. ResultsHs-cTnT was associated with Albumin (R=-0.3; P=0.01). Troponin showed no association with the rest of the markers. The mean values in the dialysis group were: Hs-cTnT 93.8 pg/ml; ferritin 222.1 µg/l; albumin 4.18 g/dl; CRP 18.4 mg/l; urea 143.3 mg/dl; creatinine 9.4 mg/dl; total testosterone 1.46 ng/ml; free testosterone 28.75 pg/ml when compared to the control group, the differences between serum values in dialysis group were significant P < 0.05. The rest of the biomarkers showed no significant differences. ConclusionThe most interesting finding was a negative association of Albumin with Hs-cTnT, indicating the possible use of albumin-adjusted Hs-cTnT rather than troponin alone to better predict critical cardiac events in hemodialysis. Troponin did not associate with SHBG, estradiol and testosterone hormones, possibly indicating no obvious role of these hormones in troponin regulation. Estimated GFR levels showed no correlation, suggesting troponin might be further degraded before renal elimination.","PeriodicalId":102216,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Sulaimani Medical College","volume":"202 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-06-21","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"139369197","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Furthermore, withthe increasing medical ability to prolong life, the patient’s quality of life has become an increasingly legitimatemedical outcome. Therefore, assessment of patients’ quality of life not only helps assess the quality of thedialysis but also is useful to guide nephrologists to develop better interventions and plans of care for the future. ObjectivesTo assess the quality of life and factors affecting hemodialysis patients. Patients and MethodsAn observational, cross-sectional study was conducted among (209) patients on maintenance hemodialysisat six major hemodialysis centres in Sulaimani Governorate. They are using a questionnaire face-to-faceinterview for ten months, from 7/Sep./2021 to 10/Jun/2022. Data analysis by the IBM SPSS program,quantitative variables are expressed as mean ± standard deviation (M±SD), median and interquartile, andresults from qualitative variables are expressed as percentages. P-value < 0.05 assume the significance forresults. ResultsOverall mean quality of life was near (37%) in (100%) of normal persons, with an SD (of 13.26). Over one-thirdwere in the age group of (50-64) years, and the number increased by age. Nearly equal male-to-female ratio(50.2male, while 49.8 female). (46.4%) were illiterates, and (67%) were Unemployed. Claimed that they had noincome (65.6 %) and diabetes mellitus among patients (45.9%). Demographic factors, dialysis adequacy, andclinical factors are among the factors that affect the quality of life.
