Plants, like other organisms, have evolved an endogenous biological oscillator to predict these daily changes in light and temperature and adjust to shifting seasonal conditions. This system must be robust to unexpected environmental challenges but can also assist plants to adjust physiology accordingly. Key features of the circadian system which contribute to achieve these are the process of entrainment, by which external cues adjust the state of the oscillator, and gating, by which the sensitivity to a stimulus is modified according to the time of day. In this way, the circadian clock is a dynamic hub which integrates physiology, metabolism and growth in the context of a plant’s current environment. We provide a comprehensive summary of the molecular composition of the core oscillator in Arabidopsis and the mechanisms of entrainment and gating. In particular, we focus on phytohormone signalling, photosynthetic metabolism and defense responses as examples of core plant responses to environment that are integrated within the circadian system.","PeriodicalId":102097,"journal":{"name":"Annual Plant Reviews online","volume":"52 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-05-14","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122873352","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Approaches to protect soil health, including the enhancement of microbial diversity, are integral to improving crop productivity and food security. Metagenomics has rapidly improved our understanding of soil microbial diversity and function, while genetic techniques have helped to dissect the complex signal exchange between microorganisms and plants. This article presents and evaluates reported beneficial effects of plant growth‐promoting bacteria (PGPB), focussing on those capable of mobilising or solubilising nutrients and/or stimulating plant growth when applied to agriculturally important grasses. The agricultural industry has capitalised on these scientific advancements, generating microbial formulations for specific crop responses. However, scientific methodologies must be applied in order to overcome inherent limitations of many PGPBs including their inability to be cultured, their poorly defined or multiple modes of action, a low level of integration with the crop partner, and an unpredictability in translating beneficial plant responses to the field. Novel approaches such as engineered rhizospheres, enhancing endophytic systems, cereal nodule development, and the use of inoculant consortiums will be necessary to sustain growth in the biofertiliser industry.","PeriodicalId":102097,"journal":{"name":"Annual Plant Reviews online","volume":"480 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-05-14","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116190766","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Recently , the pangenome concept has become widely used to investigate genome composition of a collection of individuals. The pangenome consists in the core genome, which encompasses all the sequences shared by all the individuals, and the dispensable genome, composed of sequences present in only some individuals. Pangenomic analyses open new ways to investigate and compare multiple genomes of closely related individuals at once, and more broadly new opportunities for optimizing breeding and studying evolution. This emerging concept combined with the power of the third-generation sequencing technologies gives unprecedented opportunities to uncover new genes, to fully explore genetic diversity and to advance knowledge about the evolutionary forces that shape genome organization and dynamics.","PeriodicalId":102097,"journal":{"name":"Annual Plant Reviews online","volume":"125 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-05-14","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122917715","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

From the perspective of cell cycle control, fertilisation is a hat‐trick. Firstly, the generation of gametes depends on the generation of haploid spores by meiosis and a sequence of mitotic divisions. Mitosis is required to produce the cells of the gametophyte, closely associated with differential fate acquisition. Secondly, cell cycle progression in both male and female gametes has to be synchronised in order to avoid chromosomal imbalance at karyogamy, and last but not least, the cell cycle should only be relaunched after a successful fusion. Here, we seek to survey our current knowledge of these processes from a cell cycle perspective and explore possible mechanisms involved in cell cycle control and coordination.","PeriodicalId":102097,"journal":{"name":"Annual Plant Reviews online","volume":"34 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-05-14","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126989711","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
