Hemp and its cousin marijuana, both C. sativa, have been used for millennia as a source of fibre, oil and for medicinal, spiritual and recreational purposes. Because the consumption of Cannabis can have psychoactive effects, the plant has been widely banned throughout the last century. In the past decade, evidence of its medicinal properties did lead to the relaxation of legislation in many countries around the world. Consequently, the genetics and development of Cannabis as well as Cannabis-derived products are the subject of renewed attention.Here, we review the biology of C. sativa, including recent insights from taxonomy, morphology and genomics, with an emphasis on the genetics of cannabinoid synthesis. Because the female Cannabis flower is of special interest as the site of cannabinoid synthesis, we explore flower development, flowering time well as the species’ unique sex determination system in detail. Furthermore, we outline the tremendous medicinal, engineering, and environmental opportunities that Cannabis bears. Together, the picture emerges that our understanding of Cannabis biology currently progresses at an unusual speed. A future challenge will be to preserve the multi-purpose nature of Cannabis, and to harness its medicinal properties and sustainability advantages simultaneously.","PeriodicalId":102097,"journal":{"name":"Annual Plant Reviews online","volume":"26 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-09-29","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128713507","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This plant suddenly became famous when molecular phylogenetic studies revealed that this sole species is likely the sister taxon to all other angiosperms. It has thus been a prime research model for reconstructing plant evolution and gaining insight into what the earliest angiosperms looked like. A wealth of studies on Amborella have now shed considerable light on its genome, morphology, anatomy, physiology, development, and architecture – this research is reviewed in this article. While Amborella likely retained some ancestral traits, critical character reconstructions have also highlighted some derived and sometimes unique characters in this species. The history of Amborella is also tied to the South Pacific archipelago of New Caledonia, its homeland. It was part of the New Caledonian biogeography puzzle and its genetic history shed light on the dynamics of its ecosystem, the rainforest understorey. Amborella is now cultivated in botanical gardens and has been the focus of some conservation measures that will also benefit other species in this biodiversity hotspot.","PeriodicalId":102097,"journal":{"name":"Annual Plant Reviews online","volume":"207 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-08-12","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114666015","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

To achieve this, endless tasks and functions in any living organism are performed by proteins, and these proteins can undergo various reversible or irreversible posttranslational modifications of specific amino acid residues. One example is phosphorylation, which is a reversible modification affecting protein activity, stability, interactions, and localisation. Phosphorylation is catalysed by a specific group of enzymes, kinases, and the reverse reaction of dephosphorylation is catalysed by other enzymes, phosphatases. In this article, we discuss the tools and approaches to detect protein phosphorylation in plants. We specifically emphasise mass spectrometry‐based approaches to identify phosphopeptides and the specific phosphorylated residues. We, furthermore, illustrate the importance of phosphorylation in the life of a plant with some key examples, such as hormone signalling (specifically brassinosteroids and abscisic acid), signalling associated with the RAPID ALKALINIZATION FACTOR peptide, and signalling downstream of cold stress.","PeriodicalId":102097,"journal":{"name":"Annual Plant Reviews online","volume":"16 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-08-12","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133838858","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The former appears to be a more prevalent mechanism in plants whereas the later appears to be predominant in animals. The level of miRNA-target sequence complementarity typically dictates whether mRNA repression or transcript cleavage occurs. \u0000This article will focus on our current understanding of the roles of miRNAs in plant development with a key focus on developmentally importantmiRNAs of the model plant, Arabidopsis thaliana, their modes of action, and the networks to which they belong. This article will also briefly discuss conservation of microRNAs across other plant species and directions for future research on miRNA.","PeriodicalId":102097,"journal":{"name":"Annual Plant Reviews online","volume":"2015 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-08-12","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127754046","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Isothiocyanates (ITCs) are one type of hydrolysis product that have efficacy against some forms of cancer and prevention of some neurodegenerative disorders. They can also have potent effects upon pests and diseases of crops, and give rise to the characteristic tastes and flavours of many commonly consumed Brassicales crops. The genetic mechanisms underlying GSL biosynthesis and regulation of GHPs are well elucidated in the model organism Arabidopsis thaliana, and research over the last fifteen years has also greatly expanded knowledge within Brassica spp. There are of course many hundreds of GSL-producing species within the Brassicales order, with potentially very different and/or advanced mechanisms of GSL biosynthesis, metabolism, and catabolism. This paper summarises the current understanding of GSL biosynthesis, and highlights areas of exploration beyond the ‘Arabidopsis and Brassica bubble’ of GSL research. Novel GSLs, and the gene encoding proteins that regulate their biosynthetic pathways, could greatly enhance our knowledge of Brassicales phytochemistry, evolution, and natural history if given more attention.","PeriodicalId":102097,"journal":{"name":"Annual Plant Reviews online","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-08-12","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116201111","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
