To represent these numbers in binary, a “divide-and-conquer'” technique is used in today's computer systems wherein a complex number is broken-up into its real and imaginary parts and then operations are carried out on each part as if it was a part of the real arithmetic. At the end., the overall result of the complex operation is obtained by the accumulation of the individual results. In other words, addition of two complex numbers, $(mathbf{a}+mathbf{jb})$ and $(mathbf{c}+mathbf{jd})$, requires two separate additions, $(mathbf{a}+mathbf{c})$ and $(mathbf{b}+mathbf{d})$, while multiplication of the same two complex numbers requires four individual multiplications (ac., ad., bc., bd), one subtraction $(mathbf{ac}-mathbf{bd}) =mathbf{x}$, one addition $(mathbf{ad}+mathbf{bc})=mathbf{y}$, and one overall addition $mathbf{x}+mathbf{jy}$. This can be effectively reduced to just one complex addition or only one multiplication and addition respectively for the given cases if each complex number is represented as single unit instead of two sub-units of real and imaginary components. This paper highlights the research on $(-mathbf{1}+mathbf{j})$-based binary number system, called Complex Binary Number System (CBNS), as it was presented in a tutorial at the IEEE SoutheastCon 2018.","PeriodicalId":102076,"journal":{"name":"SoutheastCon 2018","volume":"54 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122475728","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It was not unusual for electric utilities to have insufficient information about the network and phase connectivity model for the distribution system. This resulted in limited situational awareness at the distribution system level. In this paper, a visual analytics approach to gleaning intelligence from the vast amounts of data accumulated in the distribution system is proposed. The web-based visual analytics interface integrates data from heterogeneous datasets such as AMI, GIS and SCADA. The interface is designed to enable distribution system operators visualize and analyze the state of the distribution system over time. This paper presents the use of the visual analytics system to identify mismatched meter-to-transformer associations and to visualize voltage violations in a real-world distribution network.","PeriodicalId":102076,"journal":{"name":"SoutheastCon 2018","volume":"42 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-04-19","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116846841","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, ensuring this is not such an easy task, and many developers do not have the required skills or resources to ensure their code is secure. Many code analysis tools have been written to find vulnerabilities in newly developed code, but this technology tends to produce many false positives, and is still not able to identify all of the problems. Other methods of finding software vulnerabilities automatically are required. This proof-of-concept study applied natural language processing on Java byte code to locate SQL injection vulnerabilities in a Java program. Preliminary findings show that, due to the high number of terms in the dataset, using singular decision trees will not produce a suitable model for locating SQL injection vulnerabilities, while random forest structures proved more promising. Still, further work is needed to determine the best classification tool.","PeriodicalId":102076,"journal":{"name":"SoutheastCon 2018","volume":"12 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-04-19","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123845009","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

IoEs are enhanced Internets of Things (IoTs) which integrate people, process, data and heterogeneous “Things”: compute, storage, and sensor/actuator hardware. The ubiquitousness of IoE devices, the ever-increasing amount of big data in IoEs, and the need for real-time computing in IoEs have motivated the problem of distributed data storage and analysis. With trillions (big-data scale) of IoE devices on the verge of being deployed in tomorrow's ever-connected and autonomous society, and with the expected big-data generated by each such IoE device (typically image data of the order of tens and hundreds of gigabytes per day), we are rapidly approaching Big-Squared data dimensions. The power consumption of traditional cloud data centers are already about 70% of all power generated, and it will increase exponentially if Cloud computing is the only solution for tomorrow's IoEs. Moreover, the big-squared data from merging IoEs will create network and compute level bottlenecks that will be impractical from a realtime standpoint, especially in case of rapid mobility in IoEs. Hence, the need for distributed hierarchical Fog computing and associated data management. We survey key features of emerging IoEs, the existing big-data computing and storage frameworks, and point out their capabilities and deficiencies. Finally, we discuss the design and implementation of our Fog computing architecture.","PeriodicalId":102076,"journal":{"name":"SoutheastCon 2018","volume":"93 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-04-19","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"134441551","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The MIRC system integrates a modern controller interface known as the Leap Motion, which uses multiple vision sensors to gather three-dimensional anatomical arm and hand data points in the form of numerical coordinates. The MIRC system publishes this data in the form of ROS pose messages and transforms, and converts these numerical coordinates into goals or motion commands for the robots. Complex robot designs, such as robotic arms, are controlled using MoveIt's motion planning algorithms and robot configuration package. By using MoveIt's library, the framework can accommodate an ever increasing number of complex robotic arm designs. Simpler rover based designs are controlled through a custom function that interprets the operator's hand position into speed and rotation for motion. The integrated system is demonstrated in both simulation and hardware using the Kinova MICO arm and TurtleBot 2 mobile robot.","PeriodicalId":102076,"journal":{"name":"SoutheastCon 2018","volume":"9 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-04-19","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127651490","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The forecasting is performed using artificial neural networks (ANN). A distribution of the forecasting errors was fitted. A discrete set of probabilities was used to create a set of possible scenarios representing possible deviations from the forecasted outputs of load, wind, and solar. The problem of economical operation of the electric grid was formulated as a stochastic optimization model to minimize expected total cost (ETC). The ETC expression consists of (a) expected operating cost of the generators, which includes linearized fuel cost and startup costs (b) expected operating costs of energy storage system and (c) expected interruption cost. Load demand data from New England area was tested to study the efficacy of this approach. A test system consisting of 10 conventional generators, 100 wind turbines at a maximum of 0.14 MW each, totaling 14 MW and 100 solar panels at a maximum of 0.36 MW each, totaling 36 MW was considered. Simulations were carried out in MATLAB and the results show that coordinating all energy resources (1) significantly enhances the power management capability of the grid (2) reduces the ETC in addition to (3) maintaining grid balance under high penetration of renewable energy sources.","PeriodicalId":102076,"journal":{"name":"SoutheastCon 2018","volume":"252 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-04-19","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115102619","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

After a change in system load (i.e. current), the transmission line reaches a new steady-state conductor temperature after a certain period of time. This paper investigates the impact of a step change in system load on the line thermal and voltage stability limits. It also proposes a methodology to determine the critical time needed to reach the line power transfer limits. For higher accuracy, the change in line current and therefore in conductor temperature, as well as the effect that a variation in conductor temperature has on line current, are taken into account. Noticeable differences were found on the transmission line's power transfer limiting factor under different levels of step change in the system load. Moreover, the impact line length has on the power transfer limiting factors with respect to a load change is also studied.","PeriodicalId":102076,"journal":{"name":"SoutheastCon 2018","volume":"10 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-04-19","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122762294","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Finding and measuring the patterns of brain activity determine which part of the brain is handling critical functions. These patterns also monitor the effects of different conditions (i.e. learning new habits, stroke and trauma, and neurodegenerative diseases). Functional MRI measures the physiological fluctuations in brain cells and relies on the fact that neurons with more activity consume more oxygen. The output of an fMRI scan is a series of raw images, meaning they contain errors. The errors are due to thermal noise, system noise, unwanted head movement during the scan, and other sources. Hence, some preprocessing on the data is required to maximize the information that can be obtained from the images. In recent years, machine learning methods have been developed and trained to use fMRI data as input and aid medical professionals for diagnostic purposes.
