This paper is a brief comment upon some of the ways in which newly-found technologies threaten certain time-honored values and protections which, in Western culture, have attented individuals and groups. New knowledge and new technical capability sometimes are in conflict and competition with old warrants for intervention and old notions of human well-being. Who will decide whether a given intervention is good or bad, appropriate or inappropriate, full of promise or full of peril? And on what predicates will these assessments be made? Stimson","doi":"10.1016/0037-7856(77)90025-7","DOIUrl":"10.1016/0037-7856(77)90025-7","url":null,"abstract":"<div><p>United Kingdom general practice is taken as a case study of the way in which new areas of concern come to be seen as within the sphere of competence of doctors. In defining the themes of general practice, prominent U.K. practitioners have pointed to a social orientation which distinguishes general practice from other areas of medicine. This loosely defined social orientation appears to include several themes. On the one hand there is an awareness of social relationships, social factors in disease and illness behaviour, and of the social causes of disease, and on the other, a feeling for a responsibility for caring for the social consequences of diseases, for social welfare problems, and for socio- or psychotherapeutic care. An involvement in social care raises certain questions about the role of the general practitioner which have not been explored by those doctors who have discussed this social orientation. This view which emphasizes a concern for the social “reciprocity” of human existence is developed in contradistinction to more biological or mechanistic theories. The application of the “critical” psychology to the study of “medical interactions” is explained.
