Psychology and somatology: A critical psychology in the medical setting

Abstract

A non-technical approach to psychology in the medical setting, and distinct from the medical assumptions of psychiatry, is proposed. This view which emphasizes a concern for the social “reciprocity” of human existence is developed in contradistinction to more biological or mechanistic theories. The application of the “critical” psychology to the study of “medical interactions” is explained. A method of psychological consultation following from this perspective is also described.
