The amounts of chemisorption and physical adsorption of methyl iodide were measured in different humidity levels for base and TEDA-impregnated activated carbons. (Liapis et al. (1992) Rates and equilibria of adsorption and desorption of propane and propylene on 13 X molecular sieves determined experimentally using a differential sorption bed system. Sep. Technol. 2, 141–154). Propylene is the most preferentially adsorbed component, and the desorption rates of propylene and propane are slower than the adsorption rates. Mathematical models were constructed and solved, and it was found that the two-component model could provide a quantitative measure of the interactions between propylene and propane, and could describe the behavior of binary adsorption kinetics including the overshoot of the equilibrium loading by the less preferentially adsorbed propane. The theoretical results indicate that the desorption rates are not described by the same intracrystalline diffusion coefficients as the adsorption rates.</p></div>","PeriodicalId":101160,"journal":{"name":"Separations Technology","volume":"5 1","pages":"Pages 1-11"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1995-02-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1016/0956-9618(94)00102-X","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"77252771","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

For the cases of single-component adsorption, the adsorption equilibria obey the Langmuir equation, and the presence of water vapor was found to reduce the amount of adsorption. On the other hand, water vapor showed no effect on adsorption kinetics. For binary adsorption of 1-butanol and <em>p</em>-xylene with HSZ of Y- and Mordenite-type, depending upon the relative concentration of the two species, either species may be preferentially adsorbed. No simple expression was found to represent the equilibrium data. In contrast, the Langmuir equation was found to represent the binary equilibrium data of HSZ of the ZSM-5 type. Further, the dynamics of the fixed-bed adsorption may be predicted with use of the extended mass-transfer-zone method.</p></div>","PeriodicalId":101160,"journal":{"name":"Separations Technology","volume":"5 1","pages":"Pages 23-34"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1995-02-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1016/0956-9618(94)00101-W","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"79321342","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The Brownian dynamic method is used to trace the loci of slurry particles and to simulate the packing structure of submicron particles in filtrations. The major factors affecting the particle packing, such as frictional drag, van der Waals' force, electrostatic force, and Brownian force, etc., are discussed. The most compact cake is found when the frictional drag and Brownian force are of the same order of magnitude. A numerical program is designed to estimate the variations of local cake properties during a course of constant pressure filtration. The calculated results of average cake porosity and average specific filtration resistance agree very well with the experimental data.</p></div>","PeriodicalId":101160,"journal":{"name":"Separations Technology","volume":"5 1","pages":"Pages 45-53"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1995-02-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1016/0956-9618(94)00106-3","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"86005748","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Solute-rich fluid flows through the silicalite bed. When the bed is fully loaded, it is regenerated by passing steam through heat exchange tubes that are in intimate contact with the bed. In the case of ethanol, this system is able to produce 24wt% ethanol from a 1wt% solution in a single step. Because butanol is more nonpolar, the system is able to produce 50wt% butanol from a 1wt% solution in a single step. It is estimated that recovering 1% ethanol costs $0.0493/ L of 95% EtOH, whereas recovering 1% butanol costs $0.0277/L of pure BuOH. This cost is less than 4% of the selling price of butanol, which suggests this is a promising technique for product recovery in the acetone/butanol fermentation. This technology also has potential uses in removing volatile solutes from polluted water</p></div>","PeriodicalId":101160,"journal":{"name":"Separations Technology","volume":"4 4","pages":"Pages 213-229"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1994-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1016/0956-9618(94)80025-1","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"79994223","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
