The bone cement mixed with an antibiotic is well accepted for an established infection. However, its role in infection prophylaxis remains controversial due to doubts associated with bacterial resistance, efficacy, and cost. A literature review was performed on the extended use of bone cement mixed with an antibiotic. It is concluded that the individual risk-benefit must be evaluated when indicating the use of cement mixed with antibiotics in the hip replacement prophylaxis.</p></div>","PeriodicalId":101114,"journal":{"name":"Revista Latinoamericana de Cirugía Ortopédica","volume":"1 3","pages":"Pages 108-115"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-07-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1016/j.rslaot.2017.01.001","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"83055076","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"OA","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Degenerative joint diseases are among the most disabling and limiting in regards to life quality and daily activities. Biological therapies have become available to potentially treat osteoarthritis and focal chondral defects. However, there is still no efficient way to regenerate native hyaline cartilage. Stem cell therapy and bioengineering is a promising field which can transform the paradigms in orthopaedics. This review provides an overall view of the current state of biological therapies with stem and progenitor cells. We summarize cell therapy options with culture expanded cells and also four common sources of adult stem cells: bone marrow, adipose tissue, synovium and peripheral venous blood, along with clinical studies reporting their effectiveness. The purpose of this review is to summarize adult stem cells approaches for the treatment of focal chondral lesions and osteoarthritis.</p></div>","PeriodicalId":101114,"journal":{"name":"Revista Latinoamericana de Cirugía Ortopédica","volume":"1 2","pages":"Pages 66-76"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-04-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1016/j.rslaot.2016.10.002","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"80473582","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"OA","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
