Boldyrev","doi":"10.1016/0168-7336(89)80004-X","DOIUrl":"10.1016/0168-7336(89)80004-X","url":null,"abstract":"<div><p>Mechanical activation of the lanthanum, dysprosium, and bismuth morphotropic series of ferrites with perovskite structure leads to the formation of amorphous materials. Mössbauer spectra indicate lowering of the Fe<sup>3+</sup> coordination number on amorphization. X-ray diffraction reveals the changes in the short-range order of the arrangement of the heavy cations with respect to the starting crystalline samples, as well as structural differences between the amorphous ferrites. The structure of the amorphous LaFeO<sub>3</sub> can be described as quasicrystalline with trigonal-prismatic La<sup>3+</sup> configuration. Lalart","doi":"10.1016/0168-7336(89)80008-7","DOIUrl":"10.1016/0168-7336(89)80008-7","url":null,"abstract":"<div><p>The surface acidity and active sites of Ziegler-Natta catalysts (TiCl<sub>3</sub>, <span><math><mtext>1</mtext><mtext>3</mtext></math></span>AlCl<sub>3</sub>-MgCl<sub>2</sub>) before and after allevlation have been characterized by measuring the differential heats of adsorption of various probe molecules in the vapour phase.</p><p>The surface acidity was measured by the adsorption of acetonitrile. Determinations of points of zero charge (PZC) were made by means of titration curves of the samples. The PZCs obtained evidenced immediate alteration of the crystalline structure at the mechanical treatment time sequences for both types of spodumene (α and β).</p><p>Aluminium and silicon distribution on the surface (up to 100 Å depth) did not show any significant differences between samples α<sub>0</sub> and β<sub>0</sub>. The lithium increase in β<sub>0</sub> has been attributed to structural differences.</p><p>Mechanical treatment caused an increase in Al<sub>2<em>p</em></sub>, Si<sub>2<em>p</em></sub> and Li<sub>1<em>s</em></sub> photoelectron peak intensities for sample α<sub>50</sub> together with a shift in Al<sub>2<em>p</em></sub> binding energy from 0.6 eV towards lower values.
