The PZCs obtained evidenced immediate alteration of the crystalline structure at the mechanical treatment time sequences for both types of spodumene (α and β).</p><p>Aluminium and silicon distribution on the surface (up to 100 Å depth) did not show any significant differences between samples α<sub>0</sub> and β<sub>0</sub>. The lithium increase in β<sub>0</sub> has been attributed to structural differences.</p><p>Mechanical treatment caused an increase in Al<sub>2<em>p</em></sub>, Si<sub>2<em>p</em></sub> and Li<sub>1<em>s</em></sub> photoelectron peak intensities for sample α<sub>50</sub> together with a shift in Al<sub>2<em>p</em></sub> binding energy from 0.6 eV towards lower values. Abstract

Samples of α- and β-spodumene treated at various milling periods were studied by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS).
