In the first part of the study, the reproducibility of NHP and variability of Frankfort horizontal (FH) and Sella-Nasion (SN) planes with respect to the true horizontal (TH) in NHP were evaluated. The results showed good reproducibility of NHP in photographic records (Dahlberg's coefficient 1.60). The FH showed lower variability than the SNplane, with variances of 4.59 and 10.12, respectively. In the second part of the study, the agreement among cephalometric variables based on the three planes evaluated (FH, SN, TH) was assessed. For the upper maxilla, the Wilcoxon test was significant for variables based on the FH-TH and FH-SNplanes and was non-significant for variables based on SN-TH. For the mandible, the Wilcoxon test for repeated measures was significant for all the variables based on the three planes. Although variability was higher for the SNplane than for the TH plane, diagnostic agreement was better between the SNand TH planes. A total of 28 articles, published from 1981 to 2011, met the study requirements. The elements studied in the articles were in various two-dimensional formats (X-ray film, digital copy printing, scanner, software).</p></div><div><h3>Results</h3><p>X-ray film showed the best cephalometric tracing. Digital radiography obtained directly or scanned in high resolution radiographic film showed values closest to manual tracing, but digital photography of the film showed significant differences.</p></div><div><h3>Conclusions</h3><p>The latest software is reliable for clinical cephalometric study. In a random sample of 51 subjects NHP was radiographic and photographic recorded. It was drawn “variable 1<sup>a</sup>”; angle between true vertical an E Line to evaluate NHP reproducibility and method agreement. Results showed good reproducibility of NHP (SD 2,60 or less) for all photographic methods. It was observed a good method agreement between the mirror and the operator corrected method, showing this last method better results of reproducibility (SD 2,23). Method agreement between photographic and radiographic records in NHP was good (SD 1,67). Despite the good reproducibility results using Dahlberg coefficient (1,83 or less), up to the 17% of the sample showed difference in head position greater than 5° in some moments. A total of 100 patients were studied, divided into 2 groups: 50 cases for the control group, with the remainder making up the study group. The bonding technique only was used for the insertion in the first group, and in the study group, as well as the bonding technique, the aforementioned laser was applied at a power of 5mW, as an analgesic-anti-inflammatory parameter. It was applied in the immediate exact location with the optic fibre, and lasted 60 seconds, in each interdental papilla that was involved in the bonding technique treatment.</p><p>A 3-point visual analogue scale (VAS) was applied 24 hours and 48 hours after the treatment. They were classified as tolerable when the VAS varied between 0 and 1 (no pain or mild pain), and intolerable when it varied between 2 and 3 (moderate to severe pain).</p><p>The patients observed an improvement in the intensity of the pain, with significant differences between both groups.</p><p>Four cases were classified as tolerable in the control group, whereas 32 patients in the study group were classified as such.</p><p>The results were generally better in those patients who received a straight-arch bonding technique than in those with the Ricketts sandwich bonding technique.</p><p>There were 3 cases with adverse reactions (dizziness in 2 patients and painful peak in only one) which were not significant.</p><p>There was pain improvement in more than half of the patients with 1 or 2 laser applications, thus we recommend it as an alternative treatment in combination with the orthodontic bonding technique.</p></div>","PeriodicalId":100995,"journal":{"name":"Ortodoncia Espa?ola","volume":"52 2","pages":"Pages 68-78"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-04-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1016/S0210-1637(12)70009-0","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115935266","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
