Abstract

Objectives

To present the methods used to study the reliability and validity of twodimensional cephalometry, the programs and systems tested, and the most troublesome cephalometric measurements and points.

Methods

We performed a literature review of published studies on digital cephalometric Software. A total of 28 articles, published from 1981 to 2011, met the study requirements. The elements studied in the articles were in various two-dimensional formats (X-ray film, digital copy printing, scanner, software).

Results

X-ray film showed the best cephalometric tracing. Digital radiography obtained directly or scanned in high resolution radiographic film showed values closest to manual tracing, but digital photography of the film showed significant differences.

Conclusions

The latest software is reliable for clinical cephalometric study. As advances in the software were made, differences with older programs became fewer.
