Rocchi","doi":"10.1016/0739-6260(92)90025-9","DOIUrl":"10.1016/0739-6260(92)90025-9","url":null,"abstract":"<div><p>Ultrasound investigations and related techniques strongly depend on the imaged structure: in particular our attention is focused on vascular ultrasound imaging. In this work a high-resolution imaging technique for vascular ultrasound diagnosis has been developed, with emphasis on the investigation of the carotid vessel. This application is relevant due to the stroke risk factor associated with pathological situations. Our study envisages the possibility of more accurate measurements of the lesion's extent by the application of a synthetic aperture imaging technique. An imaging system based on a standard linear array of ultrasonic transducers has been simulated, exploiting the signal acquisition from multi-offset transducers. The synthetic images are quantitatively compared with <em>in vitro</em> carotid ultrasound real images, obtained with a high resolution B-mode scanner. By an experimental procedure the actual transverse carotid sections have been obtained and the digitized video camera profiles have been used to compute the backscattered field under the weak scattering assumption. The set of synthetic radiofrequency signals has been utilized for the reconstruction of synthetic aperture images and B-mode images as well. {"title":"A method to extract homogeneous regions in 3-D confocal microscopy enabling compensation for depth dependent light attenuation","authors":"N. Åslund, A. Liljeborg","doi":"10.1016/0739-6260(92)90021-5","DOIUrl":"10.1016/0739-6260(92)90021-5","url":null,"abstract":"<div><p>The problem considered is to compensate for the attenuation of light with depth when recording stacks of images with a confocal microscope, working in the epifluorescence mode. A basic assumption is that there are regions of the specimen that are homogeneous in the sense that the attenuation is constant within the region. A method is presented to trace such regions in the stack of recorded images. It is also shown how the attenuation factor of the traced region is determined. Its inverse is the correction factor to be used when compensating for the attenuation relevant to the region. Techniques have been implemented to perform the compensation automatically by changing the photomultiplier tube voltage during the recording, using computer control. Some results of using this technique are reported.</p><p>To trace a homogeneous region, a stack of 2-D histograms of adjacent images, a histostack, is used. It usually shows distinguishable features through which homogeneous regions can be traced. A homogeneous region may be extracted from the stack of recorded images and dealt with separately, set apart in a special stack. The residual stack of images, containing what is left over after a homogeneous region has been extracted, is also available, and can be used for further extractions of homogeneous regions.
