In this system, the microdistillation separation step was incorporated into the flow injection manifold and the ammonia gas sensing probe sensing element was replaced by a flow-through micro-pH electrode which sensed the change in pH of a flowing collector solution caused by the dissolution of distilled ammonia gas, in a process analogous to that occurring in the internal solution of the gas sensing probe. A computerised control and data acquisition system was constructed for this system using a commercially available data acquisition card which offered many advantages such as improved data acquisition rates and control over the system components, as well as good graphics display and data processing options. The system was optimised using a multi-variable simplex optimisation technique.</p></div>","PeriodicalId":100862,"journal":{"name":"Laboratory Automation & Information Management","volume":"33 3","pages":"Pages 199-206"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1998-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1016/S1381-141X(98)80005-1","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"72081212","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

To achieve this, specific laboratory functions and processes were identified. Methods for analyzing workflows and rules to control them are discussed. It is shown how workflow analysis can be applied in clinical laboratories using discrete event simulation. For this, a particular model (SCALES: Support and Consequences through Advanced Laboratory Expert Systems) is applied to analyze the workflow on several workstations. The results of a validation attempt are given. The information obtained from this study appeared to be very useful both from a methodological as well as a practical point of view.</p></div>","PeriodicalId":100862,"journal":{"name":"Laboratory Automation & Information Management","volume":"33 3","pages":"Pages 183-197"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1998-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1016/S1381-141X(98)80004-X","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"72033829","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Sometimes, exportable JCAMP or ASCII formats are not enough to get successful linkage because either they are not read by commercial statistical packages or the amount of spectroscopic data to be manipulated is too large and some kind of data reduction is desired. Special interest was placed on applying current ISO/EN quality guides to the overall developing process since there was a need to assure final results.
