When the same dose was administered to calves reared naturally on their dams, i.e. suckled, the sedative effect was greatly attenuated. Strong movements of muscle bands, termed haustral formation, and eruption of caecal body contents and discharge of these contents into the caecal base were reported in the study. Also seen endoscopically was constriction of the walls of the caecal base dividing that region into cranial and caudal compartments. The mean dose required was 6.8 mg/kg and this was not affected by prior administration of acepromazine maleate. In 27 cases, propofol was also used as the principal maintenance agent (mean dose rate 0.51 mg/kg/minute). Inductions were very smooth and problem free. Intubation was easily achieved in 15 cats with the aid of local desensitization by lignocaine spray or neuromuscular relaxation by suxamethonium.
