Discussions on the suitability of using other techniques of determining the contact temperature such as the tool-work thermocouple, thermovision and metallographic techniques were made. A prototype of the tool sensor based on the embedded thermocouple method was designed and constructed. Preliminary test runs in a laboratory setup to burnish flat surfaces showed that the sensor was able to detect a trend in the rise temtemperature of the ball. The compliance is provided by manipulating the part, held by the gripper fingers, in response to external forces exerted on the part during the process. The gripper consists of two parallel fingers, driven separately by DC motors, mounted on a translation stage perpendicular to their axis of motion. This configuration enables grasping an object and manipulating it in X-Y plane. The gripper is instrumented with force sensors capable of sensing the grasping force and the external forces exerted on the object. These force readings, in conjunction with a predetermined policy (dictated by the task to be performed) are used by a controller to manipulate the part. The factors and procedures used in the selection of machines, tools, fluids, tool angles, and in the analysis of the compatibility between operations and work materials has been outlined. The methods used for data acquisition and control of inference engine have been described.
