In practice, the usable performance of a modern DAC is determined by a multidimensional tradeoff among linearity, noise, bandwidth, output power, power and area efficiency, and circuit complexity (i.e., design time). This tutorial article develops a system-to-layout view of high-speed DAC design. It first revisits the DAC fundamentals and then reviews the main architectural options, including coding strategy, voltage output versus current output realization, Nyquist and oversampling operation, hybrid architectures, and time interleaving. The article next discusses the dominant dynamic distortion mechanisms in high-speed current steering DACs, with an emphasis on amplitude mismatch, timing skew, switching glitches, and code-dependent output impedance. Finally, it explains how digital predistortion (DPD), DEM, and layout-aware implementation can relax analog requirements while extending bandwidth and preserving spectral performance. The goal is to provide a readable and comprehensive design framework that clarifies where performance is gained, where it is lost, and how architecture, circuit, digital, and layout techniques should be co-optimized in practical high-speed DACs.","PeriodicalId":100636,"journal":{"name":"IEEE Solid-State Circuits Magazine","volume":"18 3","pages":"26-43"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2026-06-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"148781539","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This tutorial revisits the fundamentals of energy-efficient LDO design through two coupled goals: minimizing the dropout voltage to improve heavy-load efficiency and minimizing the quiescent current to preserve light-load efficiency, without sacrificing transient response, stability, or power supply rejection (PSR). We show that these goals are linked through a single causal chain—LDO voltage demands a large pass transistor, which imposes a large gate capacitance, ultimately requiring higher quiescent current for adequate bandwidth. Each technique surveyed—triode-region operation, output-pole-dominant (OPD) compensation with gate-drive buffers (including the domino-buffered topology), adaptive and dynamic biasing, and joint PSR optimization across the multiple supply-noise propagation paths—is presented as an attempt to break, rather than simply traverse, one link of this chain.","PeriodicalId":100636,"journal":{"name":"IEEE Solid-State Circuits Magazine","volume":"18 3","pages":"55-72"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2026-06-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"148781096","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
