Through a genealogical and critical review, this study seeks to demonstrate how the ongoing ‘psychedelic renaissance’ and its current medicalization of psychedelics may reinforce historical discourses and practices of psychiatry as technobiopower. Despite important critiques emerging in this field, the ‘psychedelic renaissance’ appears to overlook valuable contributions that French and Brazilian philosophers and psychoanalysts can offer. By incorporating analytics of desire into these productions, the humanities field of psychedelics could deepen the understanding of contemporary links between psychology, capitalism and psychedelics. Therefore, we explore the micropolitics regarding diagnostics, the contemporary malaise and some political forces driving the movement. The paper concludes by proposing ways to escape the contemporary grammar of suffering, drawing on the insights and actions of global minority movements. We assert the potential of psychedelics, in conjunction with psychotherapy, as tools for resisting neoliberalism.
","PeriodicalId":100563,"journal":{"name":"Future Humanities","volume":"3 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2025-05-04","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/epdf/10.1002/fhu2.70010","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"143905145","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"OA","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It investigates the introduction of the English language in these regions, its diffusion and the emergence of English literary practices among the urban elite, which initially excluded Bengali and Malay Muslims due to a lack of interest and opportunities, even though the tradition has subsequently flourished in both countries. The article also examines the challenges faced by this literary tradition during the colonial and postcolonial eras due to various decolonising efforts and conflicts related to language, religion, ethnicity and contesting nationalistic visions, which significantly impeded its development. It also addresses the role psychedelics can play in bringing about change in our traumatized society by inspiring us and showing us how to use the present as a possibility for fundamental transformation. It is written in the form of a short story to exemplify how these substances work and underline the critical importance of challenging protocols and conventional ways of thinking, and opening up a space for the unexpected. The story discusses societal trends, either already noticeable or hoped for, in the aftermath of the terror attack on the Nova music festival in Re'im, Israel, on October 7, 2023, where roughly two-third of the partygoers were under the influence of psychedelics. Lilla, our fictitious main protagonist, first describes her experience on that day, at the interface of psychedelics and trauma. This part of the story is influenced by observations from our clinical work with survivors as well as by preliminary insights from our phenomenological study. She then goes on to share her fears, thoughts and visions, initiating a discussion on psychedelics and society. Read through the lens of Walter Benjamin's historical materialism, dialectics between past and present, old and new, we believe that insights from psychedelics can provide a critical view of society while allowing us to envision how this moment can be seized as an opportunity, right now, for creating a break in the continuum of history!
","PeriodicalId":100563,"journal":{"name":"Future Humanities","volume":"3 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2025-02-25","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/epdf/10.1002/fhu2.70009","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"143481634","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"OA","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

{"title":"Climate Fiction as Future-Making: Narrative and Cultural Modelling Beyond Representation","authors":"Roman Bartosch, Julia Hoydis","doi":"10.1002/fhu2.70008","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.1002/fhu2.70008","url":null,"abstract":"
Climate fiction (cli-fi) increasingly attracts the attention of wider publics and expert science communities. And yet, critiques of its limits and the limits of its efficiency as a tool of persuading broader readerships are also becoming more frequent. This article draws on such critiques and discussions of the limits of representing climate change and related crises. We argue that, first, a focus on the representational capacity of fiction occludes other, equally important, functions of fiction. Second, we aver that such a focus insufficiently reflects on its own didactic bias that leads critics to endorse or even instrumentalize literary narrative for the seemingly obvious good cause of educating or mobilizing readers. The article suggests shifting the focus from mere issues of representation to questions of the effect and impact of reading in the wider conceptual context of climate imaginaries, defined as a shared set of beliefs, practices and norms, that define the scope of individual and collective future-thinking. It aims to develop a better understanding of the potential links between future-making and fiction and employs insights from model theory and theories and practices of (climate) modelling—the dominant, authoritative form of future-making in many disciplines, especially the natural sciences—to propose that cli-fi can be seen as an important alternative future-making tool when it is recognized as a form of cultural modelling. This allows us to acknowledge that cli-fi is a future-making technology directly impacting climate imaginaries, as the article will show through exemplary readings of two case studies, Jessie Greengrass's novel The High House (2021) and Rory Mullarkey's play Flood (premiered 2018).
","PeriodicalId":100563,"journal":{"name":"Future Humanities","volume":"3 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2025-02-13","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/epdf/10.1002/fhu2.70008","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"143396824","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"OA","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

But this program has two insufficiencies: 1. The circuit through which the risen consciousness of an unfree state may translate into forms of action is not provided. 2. Even if one has successfully elicited the experience of unfreedom, the transmission of that feeling of unfreedom within a localized social milieu- typically enclosed within an art gallery, a concert hall, or a punk venue- to the consciousness of the unfreedom of the social world at large is, in the least, problematic. The first insufficiency relates to the problem of the theoretical conditions of practice, or what kinds of influence can a theoretically gained description have upon practice - a very classical problem. The second insufficiency is more specific to Mattin and one would say amounts to the influence one practice may have upon other practices. But this last formulation is a superficial one, being maybe more fruitfully described as the problem of the traction one form of action may have upon the practical conditions of conceptual representation- once we understand the dialectics between action and conception that seems to be implicit in Mattin's account, and much of the present text will be dealing with exactly that.
","PeriodicalId":100563,"journal":{"name":"Future Humanities","volume":"3 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-12-26","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/epdf/10.1002/fhu2.70003","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"143119389","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"OA","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Once marginalised, psychedelics are now experiencing widespread interest and investment, spurred by changes in legal frameworks, public attitudes, and an influx of venture capital (VC). This article explores the interplay between scientific innovation and capital investment within the psychedelic sector, highlighting how private funding shapes the form of research and its financialization. The study investigates the roles of VC and private interests in driving the psychedelic renaissance, examining how these financial forces influence ethical considerations and broader socio-political implications. Through in-depth interviews with key stakeholders in the industry, including in-house scientists and investors, the research uncovers how market-driven imperatives and financial conflicts of interest shape both scientific practices and public perceptions of psychedelic medicine—and how these perceptions, in turn, influence the industry. The analysis underscores the tension between the idealistic and capitalist narratives surrounding psychedelic medicine, suggesting that the psychedelic industry reflects broader trends in biotech and pharmaceutical industries, where innovation is closely tied to financial investment and market dynamics. At the same time, it highlights the paradox of psychedelic mysticism, which remains elusive to the rigid criteria of evidence-based medicine, thereby challenging the prevailing paradigm of psychopharmacological research. The findings call for a critical examination, through continuous public engagement, of the ethical dimensions of integrating psychedelics into mainstream medicine, highlighting the need to focus on the emergence of grey areas within capital networks where cultural and political values are constantly rearranged and restructured.
","PeriodicalId":100563,"journal":{"name":"Future Humanities","volume":"3 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-12-26","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/epdf/10.1002/fhu2.70004","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"143119390","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"OA","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It is thus concerned with what Mattin calls ‘alienation from above’ and ‘alienation from below’. One of its key formulations with regard to the latter form of alienation is the notion of ‘phantasmatic subjectivity’, through which a reified yet naturalised phantom of the self is projected, masking the reality of cognitive and sub-cognitive processes. In this article, I propose a comparative discussion of Mattin's project with the French writer Pierre Klossowski's essay Living Currency (1970). Working with the influences of Nietzsche, Sade and Fourier, Klossowski also conceives of the self as a fixing or commodification of the impulses. Mattin and Klossowski are thus engaged with each other in their respective accounts of the phantasmatic construction of subjectivity. The article then follows through the divergences of the consequences derived from this analysis.
","PeriodicalId":100563,"journal":{"name":"Future Humanities","volume":"3 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-12-17","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/epdf/10.1002/fhu2.70005","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"143115955","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"OA","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The authors, both academics and composers, contend that experimental music, in its super-local, interpersonal connections, can challenge the conventional and institutional, serving as an alternative to the homogeneity and self-centred individualism fostered by capitalist systems. We propose the concept of a ‘new social virtuosity (“social virtuosity” in a music context was coined by Maggie Nicols in the 1970s to describe Feminist Improvising Group and their challenge of the “technological or instrumental elitism”; often dismissed by male musicians. (We came across it through the PhD research of one of our students Maureen Wolloshin),’ viewing the music landscape as a vast terrain where various musical, artistic, and creative directions intersect and converge, transcending presumed binaries. The paper foregrounds the significance of curatorial practice in bridging these differences and harnessing social dissonance, particularly in the context of the capitalist systems which enable these concerts. The authors argue that curation, despite its necessary interplay with these systems, can act as a tool to disrupt and question them. They explore how the act of curation influences social and political dynamics, examining its potential to create new ways of interaction and empowerment. This approach serves as a contrast to those systems that often cause disconnection and isolation. The authors reflect upon three case studies from the last two seasons of the here.here concert series that explicitly focused on the concepts of ‘ventriloquy’ and ‘social virtuosity’ as forms of creative agency: entering into critical dialogue with and giving voice to seminal works (Cage 4′33, Alexander J. Ellis (1814–1890)) for the former and three contemporary pioneers of ‘social virtuosity’—Eva-Maria Houben—Maggie Nicols and Eddie Prevost for the latter. The concept of ‘social dissonance’ is examined, illustrating how it can be used as a catalyst for creative dialogue and solidarity, while also encouraging a deeper understanding of our shared societal dynamics. Finally, the paper introduces the concept of ‘a new social virtuosity’, emphasising the importance of listening, collaboration, and collective intention in creating a shared musical experience that expands beyond the stage to include the audience. It concludes by examining the performance of 4′33 within this context and underscores the power of dissonance as a tool for creative and critical thinking.
","PeriodicalId":100563,"journal":{"name":"Future Humanities","volume":"2 4","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-10-14","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/epdf/10.1002/fhu2.70000","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"142435754","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"OA","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

By attempting an interdisciplinary analysis and by bringing together elements of sound studies, political theory and classical literature, I will explore the contemporary dynamics between social dissonance, necropolitics and resistance. The key point is that beyond contemporary contexts or rather recent modernity, resistance to the authoritarian volition can be understood metaphorically as noise within a context of a wider social dissonance arrangement. While examining Antigone's defiance in the face of oppressive power, we are reminded of the individuals striving for justice and autonomy in the face of oppressive systems, as resistance to generalized capitalism prevailing positivity and appropriation. By juxtaposing the sociopolitical context in which Sophocles wrote Antigone and various manifestations of necropolitics in our times, this article explores the relevance of the play in today's ubiquitous surveillance and subjugation. Moreover, it emphasises the significance of the term 'social dissonance', as proposed by Mattin, in understanding the responses towards power struggles and forms of resistance. The collision of these concepts occurs, here, in their shared focus on power dynamics and resistance against oppressive systems: it explores the ways in which power operates, so as to control and manipulate individuals and communities, creating conditions of voluntary servitude and subjugation. As this analysis emphasises the potential for resistance, these terms can serve as a framework to challenge dominant narratives. When examining the intersection of necropolitics and social dissonance, we can explore how the exercise of necropolitical strategies leads to oppression by silencing dissent, suppressing alternative narratives and perpetuating oppressive structures. Silence is metaphorically seen here as a system of perpetuating power, subordinating resistance and ultimately, incorporating noise into the capitalist narrative. The clash between the dominant necropolitical regime and the underlying resistance exposes the tension and contradictions within society, laying the foundation for social movements.
","PeriodicalId":100563,"journal":{"name":"Future Humanities","volume":"2 4","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-10-13","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/epdf/10.1002/fhu2.70001","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"142435255","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"OA","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
