In this paper an analysis of supplier collaboration in the development process is deployed to support the development of a dyadic (or two-level) capabilities analysis of the strategic management of the innovation process. By setting an organisation's competencies within the context of their customer or supplier interactions this paper supports the view posited by Ford et al. (1986) that interaction defines the value of assets and resources. In a study of collaboration in the UK auto industry, it was found that both operational and relational competences are critical factors in the performance of the new product development process. Thus, the ability of customers and suppliers to develop both structured and ad hoc processes of interaction is shown to be important to the development process from early supplier selection process.

","PeriodicalId":100504,"journal":{"name":"European Journal of Purchasing & Supply Management","volume":"7 1","pages":"Pages 29-37"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2001-03-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1016/S0969-7012(00)00019-8","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"71794332","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This has come about due to suppliers purveying construction contractors with a form of working capital. Inevitably, with the construction industry being volatile and prone to large numbers of insolvency, the risk associated with being a crediting organisation (e.g. supplier) is high. Suppliers’ utility gain from furnishing credit to contractors is directly related to their financial turnover. Therefore, research into supplier turnover provides valuable insight concerning issues such as their working capital ‘contribution’ to the construction industry. Using data from a UK survey of materials suppliers’ credit control and debt collection practices, stepwise multivariate discriminant analysis identified that suppliers’ turnover was related to: (1) whether they held insurance against bad debt; (2) the total number of credit accounts furnished; (3) the percentage of debting contractors who have credit limits imposed upon them; (4) whether guarantees of payment are sought; and (5) turnover trend for the last three years’ trading. The paper identifies that ‘large’ turnover suppliers tend to utilise more ‘formal’ credit control and debt collection practices (i.e. insuring against bad debt and imposing credit limits upon creditworthy contractors). This contrasts to ‘smaller’ turnover contractors, who tend only to seek guarantees of payment when a contractor places a substantial order.

","PeriodicalId":100504,"journal":{"name":"European Journal of Purchasing & Supply Management","volume":"6 3","pages":"Pages 237-243"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2000-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1016/S0969-7012(00)00021-6","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"71866067","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Moreover, the construction process is usually fragmented, and involves several parties with different objectives. Thus, often, none of them normally assumes direct responsibility for protecting the environment. The concept of supply chain management (SCM) is now commonly applied in business for the mutual benefit of enterprises in the supply chain (from the organization extracting the basic raw material to the final customer). A basic principle of SCM is “integration”. However, SCM is not well known in the construction industry. This paper considers the potential of applying SCM to integrate the construction process in Singapore, and thereby, address its pressing problems including its poor environmental performance. It is found that SCM can help to green the construction supply chain in Singapore. Some recommendations on how awareness of SCM can be enhanced, and its application by construction enterprises made most likely to succeed are offered.

","PeriodicalId":100504,"journal":{"name":"European Journal of Purchasing & Supply Management","volume":"6 3","pages":"Pages 195-206"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2000-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1016/S0969-7012(00)00015-0","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"71866066","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
