Within this framework many interesting engineering problems, e.g. elastostatics, manetostatic and heat conduction may be considered. The special analysis of the problem under consideration appears in the fundamental solutions. A general procedure for derivation of fundamental solutions with regard to an effecient numerical realisation of the boundary element method is discussed. In the appendix a FORTRAN IV code concerning the calculation of fundamental solutions in anisotropic elastostatics is presented.

","PeriodicalId":100474,"journal":{"name":"Engineering Analysis","volume":"4 3","pages":"Pages 165-173"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1987-09-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1016/0264-682X(87)90007-4","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"88050144","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This formulation involves only two kinds of integral equations which are similar to those employed in the linear analysis of plate bending problems by the boundary element method and are suitable to plates with arbitrary plan forms and under general boundary conditions or in-plane load conditions. A new simple boundary element discretisation scheme is established based on these integral equations. The existence in these equations of domain integrals containing the unknown lateral post-buckling deflection of the plate requires the introduction of domain in addition to boundary unknowns in the formulation. Through the boundary and domain discretisation, two linear algebraic systems of equations are obtained from which the boundary unknowns are eliminated and the eigenvalue problem for the buckling load and the buckling mode is thus formulated. Two alternative approximations of the post-buckling deflection have been tried for the evaluation of the domain integrals. The first involves finite element type triangular cells, the second trigonometric series.

The various examples solved include simply supported or clamped square plates under a variety of edge loadings as well as an equilateral triangular plate under uniform edge compression. The numerical results obtained demonstrate the validity of the formulation through the convergence of the approximate model indicating at the same time the degree of accuracy which can be achieved.

","PeriodicalId":100474,"journal":{"name":"Engineering Analysis","volume":"4 2","pages":"Pages 75-81"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1987-06-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1016/0264-682X(87)90016-5","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"72792065","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In thispaper, a new inner-product and norm is developed which enables the numerical modeler to approximate such engineering problems by developing a generalized Fourier series. The resulting approximation is the ‘best’ approximation in that a least-squares (L2) error is minimized simultaneously for fitting both the problem's boundary conditions and satisfying the linear operator relationship (the governing equations) over the problem's domain (both space and time). Because the numerical technique involves a well-defined inner-product, error evaluation is readily available using Bessel's inequality. Minimization of the approximation error is subsequently achieved with respect to a weighting of the inner product components, and the addition of basis functions used in the approximation.

","PeriodicalId":100474,"journal":{"name":"Engineering Analysis","volume":"4 2","pages":"Pages 82-88"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1987-06-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1016/0264-682X(87)90017-7","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"90237987","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
