The formulation starts with either the reciprocal theorem or the weighted residual statement and with the aid of the equilibrium, kinematical and constitutive equations succeeds in providing the pertinent integral equations of the problem in the time domain within the context of small deformation theory of elastoplasticity or viscoplasticity. The formulation involves not only surface integrals but volume integrals as well. Both the initial strain and the initial stress approaches are presented. Spatial and temporal discretization of the integral equations are accomplished with the aid of higher order boundary elements and interior cells and a linear time variation of field quantities inside every time step, respectively. The solution then proceeds in a time stepping fashion following two alternative time-marching procedures. Various solution algorithms are provided and their applicability is discussed.</p></div>","PeriodicalId":100474,"journal":{"name":"Engineering Analysis","volume":"5 3","pages":"Pages 114-125"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1988-09-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1016/0264-682X(88)90001-9","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"90324815","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This equation is quite useful in a variety of physical problems, including forced vibrations of membranes, acoustic waves, and damped membrane response. Reported herein is a special mathematical treatment in which the solution to Eq. (1) is obtained by combining perturbation theory with the boundary integral equation technique. A particularly elegant formulation develops in which the solution to Eq. (1) may be rewritten as the solution of a set of coupled Poisson equations. Each equation may be handled by boundary elements using established methods for solving the Poisson equation. The time dependence of the formulation is handled exactly and explicitly. The new technique is of extreme interest in the theory of time-dependent phenomena in that it couples the best features of boundary elements with the well-established mathematics of perturbation theory. The paper concludes with examples of the use of the technique to several engineering problems and a discussion of the method's viability for other types of problems.</p></div>","PeriodicalId":100474,"journal":{"name":"Engineering Analysis","volume":"5 3","pages":"Pages 133-139"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1988-09-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1016/0264-682X(88)90003-2","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"80944427","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The last part is oriented to applications of the stability and finite strip fundamentals to the solution of bifurcation buckling, post buckling equilibrium and mode interaction.
