The total thickness of the layer, the thickness of the reverse-gradient region near the bottom, and the magnitude of the reverse gradient all changed greatly within an hour-long data series. Systematic changes over a 5-day period were not much larger than these variations. Cross-shelf variations were also not greater than the 1-h changes at one station, except that in depths of 40 m and less the layer disappeared. Mixed layer thicknesses were comparable to the turbulent Ekman depth. The reversed gradient was slightly superadiabatic on average, with large variations about the mean. Microstructure activity decreased to a low level near the bottom. Vertical wavenumber spectra could not be interpreted in terms of a universal turbulent form.</p></div>","PeriodicalId":100360,"journal":{"name":"Deep Sea Research","volume":"25 12","pages":"Pages 1235-1243"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1978-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1016/0146-6291(78)90016-4","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"72285680","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Experimental examples are given in which transport restricts maximal growth rate in some cases and does not affect it in others. It is demonstrated that normal variations in cell yield from substrate consumed at various growth rates can generate curvature in growth kinetic curves unrelated to saturation phenomena. Nutrient uptake and growth rate versus concentration curves are diagrammed for a range of situations, and the kinetic constants for these curves are discussed. The definition of a previously introduced term, the affinity, is sharpened and literature values compiled. It is suggested that this is one of the more useful kinetic constants for describing the kinetics of aquatic microbial processes.</p></div>","PeriodicalId":100360,"journal":{"name":"Deep Sea Research","volume":"25 12","pages":"Pages 1163-1177"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1978-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1016/0146-6291(78)90011-5","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"72285684","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
