Monaghan","doi":"10.1016/0956-7143(94)90137-6","DOIUrl":"10.1016/0956-7143(94)90137-6","url":null,"abstract":"<div><p>This paper deals with the effect of contact resistances on the effective through-the-thickness thermal conductivity of an unconsolidated thermoplastic composite prepreg stack. The thermal conductivity of a 40-ply unconsolidated APC-2 stack is experimentally determined and the result compared with published values for a consolidated APC-2 laminate. Experimental results show that the effect of increasing the pressure on or temperature of the stack is to reduce the contact resistances between the plies and hence increase the effective thermal conductivity of the stack. The model, termed ‘first-order model’, assumes that all subprocess steps can be modelled as having first-order dynamics. The steps are then linearized and summed according to their ‘extensive’ variables. Part complexity is handled using an information theoretic approach. The result for hand lay-up is a simple linear equation which compares favourably with experiments and with other very detailed cost estimation models.
