The carbon stocks of aboveground, below-ground (root) and sediment carbon pools were assessed to arrive at the total ecosystem carbon stock. The grey mangrove Avicennia marina was the predominant species which registered an average tree density of 1,592.31 individuals ha-1. The overall mean above-ground biomass was 260.69 ± 151.76 t ha-1, while the overall mean root biomass was 102.84 ± 53.84 t ha-1. The estimated mean C-stocks were 130.34 ± 75.88, 51.42 ± 26.92 and 28.68 ± 10.14 ha-1 in the above-ground, root and sediment carbon pools respectively. The carbon stock in the aboveground biomass constituted 61.94%, while the root biomass and sediment constituted 24.43% and 13.63% of C-stock respectively. The total ecosystem carbon stock of Muzhappilangad wetland was 210.44 t C ha-1 which is equivalent to 772.32 t CO2 ha -1. The Muzhappilangad estuarine wetland has a mangrove cover of 8.9 ha and therefore it can be presumed that this small wetland along the southwest coast of India has the potential to sequester and store 1,872.92 t C, equivalent to an estimated 6,873.61 t CO2.","PeriodicalId":93791,"journal":{"name":"Journal of the Marine Biological Association of India. Since all size groups are available throughout, the present study was carried out to find out the morphometric variations of the species with respect to its breeding season. A total of 9 morphometric variables and weight were recorded monthly from 429 fishes, landed at Vizhinjam fish landing center (Thiruvananthapuram District, Kerala) for two years from January 2017 to December 2018. Analysis of variance (One Way ANOVA) along with post hoc comparisons (DMR test) of the morphometric variables comparing breeding seasons (pre spawning, spawning and post spawning) revealed significant (P < 0.05) variations in weight, head length, snout length, snout to pre-nostril length, inter-dorsal length and caudal peduncle length in total population (N=429). Seasonal comparison of male population (n=176) alone also showed significant difference similar to total population except head length and female population (n=253) registered significant difference in only three variables (snout length, snout to pre-dorsal length and caudal peduncle length). Morphometric ratios (TL: SL, SnL: SL, Sn-Plvc: SL, Intr-Drsl: SL and CPL: SL) showed significant variations between the seasons. Principal component analysis extracted three variables ratio, TL: SL, SnL: SL and CPL: SL as contributing factors for morphometric variations in breeding season. Rate of growth in terms of morphometric ratios showed more fluctuations than measured variables, which clearly emphasized the shift in growth rate from length to weight dependency during breeding season.","PeriodicalId":93791,"journal":{"name":"Journal of the Marine Biological Association of India. They are oleaginous saprophytic marine heterokontophytes and are emerging as an alternative oil source in pharmaceutical and aquaculture industries. These are known for their role in marine food web and nutritional recycling and are commercially exploited for their ability to produce abundant nutraceutical fatty acids, particularly long-chain poly unsaturated fatty acids such as docosahexaenoic acid, eicosapentaenoic acid and squalene. This review gives an insight on the available information on taxonomy, morphology, biodiversity and utilisation of Thraustochytrids and also identifies the knowledge gap and understanding in the field of Thraustochytrids and their importance in polyunsaturated fatty acids enriched commercial products.","PeriodicalId":93791,"journal":{"name":"Journal of the Marine Biological Association of India. Among the strains three were non-fluorescent and others were fluorescent Pseudomonas strains. Fluorescent strains are known to secrete pyoverdine, a yellow-green siderophore which has wide application in agriculture and allied sectors. Fluorescent strains were further characterized by 16S rDNA sequencing and were identified as Pseudomonas aeruginosa strain TRG1 (Genbank Accession No. KC109784).","PeriodicalId":93791,"journal":{"name":"Journal of the Marine Biological Association of India.
