Specific to large arteries, vascular aging can broadly manifest as carotid and aortic luminal dilation, endothelial dysfunction, increases in carotid intima-media thickness, as well as central arterial stiffening1. Importantly, increases in central arterial stiffness contribute to an augmentation of central blood pressure, via an early return of reflected waves from peripheral sites, as well as microcirculatory end-organ damage, via excess transmission of pressure pulsatility that may ultimately increase cardiovascular disease (CVD) risks1. While there are likely several risk factors that may contribute to accelerated vascular aging and increased CVD risks, both reduced cardiorespiratory fitness (CRF)2 and obesity3 are important risk factors that have been independently associated with central arterial stiffening. However, the interactive effects of CRF and obesity on vascular aging remain unclear. In this issue of the Korean Journal of Sports Medicine, Heffernan and Loprinzi4 sought to determine the joint association of CRF and obesity, quantified as the fatness-fitness index (FFI), on estimated pulse wave velocity (ePWV), pulse pressure, and the vascular overload index, all of which are indices of vascular aging that were derived from brachial blood pressure to inform overall vascular burden due to arterial stiffness and blood pressure pulsatility.","PeriodicalId":93679,"journal":{"name":"Taehan Sup'och'u Uihakhoe chi = The Korean journal of sports medicine","volume":"39 3","pages":"91-94"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-09-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://ftp.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pub/pmc/oa_pdf/ad/c1/nihms-1738925.PMC8936800.pdf","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"40313167","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"OA","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Methods: We surveyed elite female athletes in the National Training Center about their experiences of premenstrual syndrome. Premenstrual syndrome was diagnosed using the premenstrual symptoms screening tool. The Mann-Whitney test was applied to determine the association of premenstrual syndrome with differences in age, training time, and body mass index; and the chi-squared test was performed to investigate the association of premenstrual syndrome with differences in alcohol and coffee intake, diet for weight loss, stress fracture, and menstrual regularity. Results: Of the 124 athletes, 18 (14.5%) met the criteria for the diagnosis of premenstrual syndrome. These athletes complained of symptoms such as fatigue/lack of energy (18, 100%), anger/irritability (14, 77.8%), joint/muscle pain (10, 55.6%). There was no significant difference in menarche age, training time, or body mass index between the premenstrual syndrome and non-premenstrual syndrome groups. There was also no significant difference in alcohol or coffee intake, diet for weight, stress fracture, or menstrual regularity between the two groups. The athletes with premenstrual syndrome felt that premenstrual symptoms interfered with their performance, but few of them visited the doctor. Conclusion: Premenstrual syndrome athletes felt that their performance was hampered because their symptoms were not adequately managed. However, none of the factors we investigated showed any association with premenstrual syndrome. Hence more research and proactive management of the premenstrual symptoms of female athletes is recommended.","PeriodicalId":93679,"journal":{"name":"Taehan Sup'och'u Uihakhoe chi = The Korean journal of sports medicine","volume":"9 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-03-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"87106605","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Methods: We enrolled 23 patients with neck and shoulder pain syndrome (mean age, 55±16 years; onset, 12.65±8.90 months) who underwent ESWT from July to December 2019. ESWT (4 to 5 bar or 0.23 – 0.45 mJ/mm 2 , 1,500 to 2,000 times/region, 7 Hz) was performed at least 4 consecutive times per week. Evaluated outcomes were visual analogue scale (VAS) of pain and tenderness, neck disability index (NDI), and shoulder passive range of motion (ROM; forward flexion [FF], external rotation at neutral [ER], internal rotation at back [IR]). Pain and tenderness VAS scores were assessed at every follow-up, while NDI and shoulder ROM were evaluated two times before treatment and at the final follw-up (at 4.52±0.73 weeks). Results: The pain VAS score decreased from 5.5±2.4 at first visit to 4.0±1.8 (p=0.001), 3.3±2.1 (p=0.02), and 3.1±2.2 (p=0.29) at the first, second, and third follow-up visits. The tenderness VAS at first visit was 5.98±1.89, which decreased to 5.17±1.83 (p=0.005), 4.61±1.67 (p=0.05), and 4.09±1.92 (p=0.06) at the first, second, and third follow-up visits. NDI was significantly reduced from 18.04±8.86 to 10.04±6.94 at last follow-up (p=0.001) and shoulder ROM was significantly improved after treatment (FF: 159.6°±28.0° to 177.8°±8.5°, p=0.001; ER: 72.2±15.7° to 79.6±2.1°, p=0.02; IR: 10.2±3.49 [T 10] to 6.9±1.7 [T 7], p=0.001). Conclusion: Consecutive ESWT was effective in treating neck and shoulder pain syndrome with functional improvement and pain reduction. Regarding simultaneous pain and tenderness reduction, receiving ESWT two times per week was effective.","PeriodicalId":93679,"journal":{"name":"Taehan Sup'och'u Uihakhoe chi = The Korean journal of sports medicine","volume":"5 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"74977819","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Blood and noninvasive TMG test were performed on the 1st, 3rd, and 5th days before and immediately after the marathon. The muscles assessed were the vastus lateralis (VL), vastus medialis (VM), rectus femoris (RF), biceps femoris (BF), semitendinosus (ST), tibialis anterior, gastrocnemius lateralis, and gastrocnemius medialis. Lactate dehydrogenase levels (lactate dehydrogenase) increased sharply immediately after the competition and decreased to the pre-competition level after 5 days. Dm was the highest immediately post-competition at BF, ST, VL, VM, and RF muscles, with a tendency to decrease to pre-competition levels after 1 day. The application of TMG to identify muscle changes in central fatigue studies may be appropriate in the proximal region rather than in the distal region.","PeriodicalId":93679,"journal":{"name":"Taehan Sup'och'u Uihakhoe chi = The Korean journal of sports medicine","volume":"1962 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"91282534","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Therefore, this study aimed to compare the subjective and objective assessments of physical activity (PA) and exercise capacity (EC) in adults with CHD and age-matched, healthy controls. Methods: Forty-six adults with CHD (male, 26; age, 20.6±1.3 years) and forty-six healthy controls (male, 24; age, 21.2±1.6 years) underwent an assessment of subjective and objective PA levels using the Global Physical Activity Questionnaire and the accelerometer device (GENEActiv) worn on the wrist for seven consecutive days, respectively. EC was directly measured by peak oxygen uptake (peak VO 2 ) during a graded exercise test. Results: Subjectively and objectively measured of moderate to vigorous PA in adults with CHD were lower than those with healthy controls (p=0.008, p=0.004), while the majority of adults with CHD have achieved the recommended levels of PA (150 min/wk). In addition, peak VO 2 was lower in adults with CHD than in healthy controls (30.8±8 mL/kg/min vs. 46.7±10 mL/kg/min, p < 0.001). Conclusion: Although the majority of adults with CHD meet the recommended levels of PA, their overall PA levels and EC are still lower than those of age-matched, healthy adults without CHD.","PeriodicalId":93679,"journal":{"name":"Taehan Sup'och'u Uihakhoe chi = The Korean journal of sports medicine","volume":"6 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"88988528","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Methods: In this study, 3,234 adults living in rural areas were surveyed from 2007 to 2015 and the data was finally analyzed on 2,149 adults. To identify that obesity indicators are mediated in relation to the association between relative grip strength and C-reactive protein (CRP) level, odds ratio (OR) and 95% confidence interval (CI) were calculated using logistic regression analysis (p<0.05). Results: As confounding variables were adjusted, the odds ratio for high inflammatory conditions was lower at a high (OR, 0.58; 95% CI, 0.40–0.85) or medium (OR, 0.64; 95% CI, 0.46–0.90) level of relative grip strength than a low level of relative grip strength. However, there were no significant results if the body fat percentage was added for the confounding variable. When the association between relative grip strength and inflammatory conditions was divided by sex, for women, the odds ratio about high inflammatory conditions was gradually decreased as the relative grip level increased (medium level: OR, 0.55; 95% CI, 0.35–0.87; high level: OR, 0.49; 95% CI, 0.30–0.82). The association of relative grip strength with inflammatory conditions was shown differently in age groups. Conclusion: In conclusion, improvement of muscle strength is a factor that can lower the level of inflammation, and it is important to lower the level of inflammation that can cause cardiovascular disease through resistance exercise differentiated by age and sex.","PeriodicalId":93679,"journal":{"name":"Taehan Sup'och'u Uihakhoe chi = The Korean journal of sports medicine","volume":"2 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-09-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"75664102","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
