This study aims to assess the alcohol-related behaviour and frequency of alcohol consumption in the inhabitants of the Kępno district in Poland. Material and methods: Study subjects included 299 inhabitants of the Kępno district in Poland consisting of 177 women (59.2%) and 122 men (40.2%) with the age range of 18-73 years and 19-69 years, respectively. The study was carried out anonymously in 2019 using a questionnaire employed in the direct interview method. Results: A total of 78.6% of participants were found to be currently drinking alcohol, 10.7% were not drinking alcohol at present and 12.7% had never drunk alcohol. The majority of respondents initiated drinking alcohol between 13 and 18 years of age. People from rural areas started drinking alcohol significantly earlier; more than half first consumed alcohol before the age of 15. About half of the subjects drank no more than 4 units of alcohol during a typical day of alcohol consumption. A total of 41.3% of people aged 43-70 years consumed 7-9 units of alcohol during a typical day compared to only 23.9% of the youngest respondents. A total of 60% of participants consumed alcohol several times a year regardless of sex, age and place of residence. Rates of alcohol being consumed a few times per month were slightly higher in men than women (18.3% vs. 15.4%, respectively). Conclusions: Healthy lifestyle should be promoted, highlighting the harm caused by alcohol drinking at primary and secondary schools because of the concern over the early age of alcohol initiation in the Kępno district, in particular with attempts to target adolescents living in rural areas. Taking into account the trends in the study group, special attention should be paid to women and the population of the oldest people.","PeriodicalId":93580,"journal":{"name":"Journal of health inequalities","volume":"11 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"86063640","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This study aimed to assess the association between self-reported quality of health care workers’ (HCWs) communication with their patients and HCWs’ attachment styles and personal relationship status and quality during the COVID-19 pandemic in Poland. Material and methods: Two thousand three hundred three HCWs participated in the online survey conducted in all voivodeships in Poland in early 2022, including 1791 individuals living in close relationships (defined as being in a relationship for at least six months). The study explored this association among four groups of HCWs: physicians ( n = 498), nurses ( n = 1216), paramedics ( n = 166), others ( n = 423). Communication competencies were evaluated using the 12-item Health Professionals Communication Scale (HPCSS-12) (range 12-72) measuring empathy, informative communication, respect, and social skills. The quality of the HCWs’ relationships was examined using Experiences in Close Relationships – Revised Scale (ECR-RS), which measures security of attachment. Results: The overall mean HPCSS-12 index was 59.58 ± 7.36, with a significant difference between physicians according to their relationship status. Problems in relationships were reported by 24.5% of respondents, ranging from 21.2% among physicians to 31.7% among paramedics. HCWs reporting a less secure attachment style scored 2.73 points lower on the HP-CSS scale as compared to those with no such problems ( p < 0.001). In males, having good and secure relationships was associated with better communication particularly among the group of other HCWs (64.55 ± 7.05) and in paramedics (61.83 ± 3.94). Also, high HPCSS-12 values were achieved by female physicians and other female professionals living in secure relationships (61.61 ± 7.13 and 61.04 ± 6.30, respectively). Conclusions: Health care providers should be aware that the quality of HCW-patient communication is not only associated with gender, age, or occupational group, but also with the HCW’s personal situation in a family or other close relationship.","PeriodicalId":93580,"journal":{"name":"Journal of health inequalities","volume":"37 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"83823686","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The biggest cities of the region are Lublin, Białystok, Olsztyn, Rzeszow, and Kielce, whose inhabitants constitute less than 25% of the total population of the analyzed region. The vast majority of air pollution studies to date have been conducted in heavily polluted areas, where patients are exposed to moderate to extreme concentrations of pollutants. The composition of the pollution itself is also not without significance, as it differs significantly from the types of smog we are familiar with. The type of air pollution known as Polish smog is rich in compounds such as PM 2.5 , PM 10 , and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (benzo(a)pyrene) from low emissions associated with household heating with solid fuels (coal, wood, and often also waste) and imposes detrimental effects on the health and life of the population, in particular in the context of cardiovascular effects. In this publication, we aimed to present the baseline results of the EP-PARTICLES investigators’ research up to this point and propose steps aimed at changing the state of air quality and reducing existing exposure. It contains many bioactive ingredients, including bacteria that are transferred, among other things, from the mother’s intestines to the child during breastfeeding. It is known that maternal postpartum psychiatric disorders can alter her intestine’s microbiota, which in turn can affect the bacteria present in the milk. However, it is not known whether postpartum mental disorders in women differentiate the nutritional composition and energy value of breast milk. Therefore, the aim of the study was to assess the content of total protein, fats, carbohydrates, dry matter and energy value of milk of women at risk of postpartum depression symptoms four weeks after delivery. Material and methods: The research was carried out in the fourth week after delivery. Seventy five women partici pated. The Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale (EPDS) research tool was used in the study. The analysis of the human milk composition was performed with the Miris HMA. Results: The prevalence of the risk of PPD symptoms in the study sample was estimated at 28% on the EPDS. It was not found that the risk of PPD symptoms differentiate the nutritional composition and calorie content of human milk ( p > 0.05). Conclusions: Human milk is a perfectly selected and well-balanced food for a baby, regardless of the presence or absence of the risk of postpartum depression symptoms in the study sample.","PeriodicalId":93580,"journal":{"name":"Journal of health inequalities","volume":"60 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"84144964","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
