Insufficient NO production is one of the earliest symptoms of endothelial dysfunction and contributes to progression of cardiovascular and Alzheimer diseases. By the fourth decade of life NO bioavailability significantly decreases and it correlates with age-related decline in physical activity. Objective: To investigate the effects of rehabilitation in the form of dance and movement therapy on nitric oxide levels in elderly women. Methods: The nitric oxide concentration in the blood plasma was determined using the Griess indirect method in the period before and after rehabilitation. The study included 20 healthy women aged between 61-75 participating in the 3-month rehabilitation of dance movement therapy comprising aerobic exercise training, three sessions a week, for 45 minutes. Results: After rehabilitation the NO levels in the plasma increased with statistical significance set at p = 0,0304. Conclusions: Regular dance movement therapy increases NO bioavailability in elderly women and it can slow down the age-related losses in endothelial function consequent to prevention of cardiovascular diseases. This form of rehabilitation is recommended for older people as it does not pose a risk to health, and if properly conducted, it is conducive to maintaining longevity.","PeriodicalId":93474,"journal":{"name":"Medicina sportiva (Krakow, Poland : English ed.)","volume":"19 1","pages":"130-133"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-10-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"89402645","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The subject of climbing injuries is often discussed, however, the characteristic posture of the climbers and the associated risk of straining and overloading the back is still almost unexplored. Objective: To assess body posture of rock climbers and the factors contributing to changing the shape of curvature of the spine in the sagittal plane. Methods: The study was conducted on 58 person group of men. The subjects were divided into: group I - men trained to rock climbing, group II - men who have not been trained to rock climbing. In a clinical trial the curvature of the spine in the sagittal plane has been rated via the use of Rippstein Plurimetr, Dega test and the Thomas test. Results: It has been shown that men who are training rock climbing for extended periods of time have more chest kyphosis of the spine compared with men who are not. The study confirmed that the effect of the size of the thoracic kyphosis of climbers has: climbing level, training duration and the intensity of your workout. The results of the Dega test have shown the presence of the pectoral muscle contracture in 85% of climbers. Conclusions: Regular practice of climbing affects the formation of anterior-posterior curvature of the spine, and thus the attitude of the body, leading to the emergence of a typical body shape of climbers, namely, the “climber’s back”.","PeriodicalId":93474,"journal":{"name":"Medicina sportiva (Krakow, Poland : English ed.)","volume":"55 1","pages":"72-77"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-06-25","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"75779334","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, the age of peak swimming speed for other strokes such as butterfly is not known. Objectives: We investigated whether the age of peak swimming speed and peak swimming speed changed across years in elite butterfly and freestyle swimmers at national level (Switzerland) between 1994 and 2011. Methods: Changes in swimming speed and age of the annual ten fastest swimmers across years were investigated using linear regression analyses and two-way analysis of variance (ANOVA). Results: For both butterfly and freestyle, the age of peak swimming speed was ~19 years for women. For men, the age of peak swimming speed was at ~22 years over all distances with the exception in 200m freestyle with ~21 years. The age of peak swimming speed increased for women in 50m from ~19 years to ~21 years, in 100m and 200m butterfly from ~18 years to ~20 years while it remained unchanged in 50m, 100m and 200m freestyle at ~19, ~18 and ~20 years, respectively. For men, the age of peak swimming speed was constant for butterfly at ~24, ~23 and ~21 years, respectively, and for freestyle at ~23 years in 100m and ~22 years in 200m across years with the exception of a decrease in 50m freestyle from ~23 years (1994) to ~22 years (2011). Both women and men increased peak swimming speed over all distances. Sex difference in peak swimming speed increased in butterfly from 10% in 1994 to 12% in 2011 in 50m to 200m and in freestyle in 100m from 12% in 1994 to 14% in 2011 while it remained unchanged in 50m and 200m freestyle at 12% and 10%, respectively. Conclusion: To summarize, in butterfly swimming, women seemed to achieve peak swimming speed at ~19 years and men at ~21-22 years. For practical applications, a career as butterfly swimmer may endure longer in men compared to women.","PeriodicalId":93474,"journal":{"name":"Medicina sportiva (Krakow, Poland : English ed.)","volume":"5 1","pages":"1-9"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-03-20","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"91099618","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
