However, often in health research and practice, sex and gender considerations are either overlooked or confounded. Recent developments in health research and practice ask for the inclusion of\u0000 sex and gender considerations within health research and practice. This article is a reaction to these calls. It explores the ways in which an international team of health researchers created a comic book that highlighted the impact of gender in many areas of health across an individual’s\u0000 life course. The creative processes are critically explored, as well as selected images. Through this work, it is proposed that comic art knowledge mobilization projects can be viewed as means to transform health research and practice by critiquing and disrupting dominant cis-heteronormative\u0000 sex and gender discourses.

Placing artworks into hospital rooms may be one way to improve these experiences, and, for example, applying virtual reality\u0000 can offer new opportunities for increased well-being. A total of 29 research articles indexed in three databases (Arts in Medicine, PubMed and PsycINFO) were included in the review. They were selected using thematic searches. The study shows that systematic research supporting the value of\u0000 art in the healthcare sector is still limited. Moreover, it acknowledges clear positive effects of art on patient outcomes in a hospital context. It is concluded that artworks can positively affect the mood of patients and offer them means to better cope with mental and physical health conditions\u0000 although more research of different art practices in hospital contexts is needed.

The author’s art process involves analysing her own experiences and therefore she also approached her pregnancy through an artistic lens. In this\u0000 article, the author describes the art-based process used to increase self-knowledge and self-exploration of the changes occurring in life during and after pregnancy. This self-analysis contributed to the development and collection of ideas that formed the author’s identity as a new mother.\u0000 Motherhood incorporates both joyous and difficult experiences, and photography allowed the author to place those experiences side by side, integrating them into a coherent story. The project can potentially benefit other new mothers experiencing the transition into motherhood ‐ a transition\u0000 often shrouded in mystery and unhelpfully laden with unrealistic expectations, as the author discovered and is demonstrated in photographs.

The aim of this article is to evaluate community-based arts funded projects in terms of their priorities and effectiveness and discuss possibilities for enabling Arts on Prescription schemes in Malta.\u0000 Thematically, this article explores discourse on the potential of the arts on promoting well-being. Methodologically, this article draws on primary data collected from focus groups, interviews and an online survey with project leaders and artists of funded arts projects targeting mental health,\u0000 disability or old age. Specifically, this research evaluates all national funded community-based arts projects in Malta between 2014 to 2018 under a national scheme of the President’s Award for Creativity fund, managed by the national Arts Council Malta. This article focuses on a study of the ‘About Being’ project, which provides dance and movement sessions for stroke survivors in the Cumbrian city of Carlisle, United\u0000 Kingdom. The study evaluated the model of practice applied to the community project and how the sessions supported the ongoing recovery of stroke survivors. The methodology involved observations of the sessions and qualitative interviews. A unique feature of this project is that it brings\u0000 together the fields of education, arts and health by engaging practitioners, academics and student volunteers, along with the stroke survivors who participate in the sessions. This study used phenomenological ethnography to consider how collaborative songwriting might enhance the participatory experience\u0000 of a Singing for Breathing group for people with breathlessness and chronic lung disease. Participants used the songwriting process to celebrate and develop their shared identity, musical and cultural heritage. Songwriting enabled participants to share their lived experiences of the anxiety\u0000 and social isolation of chronic lung disease, and thereby to explore their being ‘all in the same boat’ musically, culturally and existentially. When considered within the context of similar singing-based and writing-based research, this study suggests that participatory and collaborative\u0000 songwriting projects might confer psychosocial benefits to a group and to its members. While further research is needed, we propose that singing groups aiming to improve health should include songwriting.
