It first examines the impact of therapies privileging a Western humanist perspective, while proposing the historical and cultural root of the problem; then clarifies what the visible limitations are when a belief in philosophical and cultural humanism is not adhered to. This will be followed by demonstrating the strengths and benefits of integrating transpersonal and indigenous perspectives into a framework of understanding of what it means to be human. Recommendations for active steps towards actualising the goal of establishing an indigenous and transpersonal therapies alliance to promote holistic and pluralistic mental health practice will be provided.","PeriodicalId":92595,"journal":{"name":"Transpersonal psychology review","volume":"167 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"83885271","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

He further went on to suggest that the interconnected, animist view of nature present in many Eastern religions provides a more ecologically sound framework for a religiously informed relationship with nature. White’s paper has inspired further scholarship exploring the veracity of his claims. This paper will explore how nature is valued in Christianity and three key Eastern religious traditions (Buddhism, Hinduism, and Sikhism) and how these values translate to religiously influenced ecological activism. Finally, it will provide an overview of some of the research comparing ecological values across different religious groups to examine the empirical support (if any) for White’s claims.","PeriodicalId":92595,"journal":{"name":"Transpersonal psychology review","volume":"142 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"86597673","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Its historic focus on mystical/spiritual and non-ordinary states of consciousness, coupled with its continued emphasis on subjective and experiential inquiry, have often led to it being excluded in favour of more materialist, positivistic paradigms that currently dominate the discipline. Rather than attempt to simply adapt and assimilate into more mainstream, conventional forms of Psychology, Transpersonal Psychology has a unique opportunity to actively embrace its otherness and outsider status; to pursue authentic interdisciplinary encounters and pioneer more inclusive and radical approaches to research methods. In contemporary Humanistic and Engaged expressions of Eastern Wisdom Traditions (specifically Hinduism, Buddhism and Daoism) one may observe the increasing emphasis on ecological awareness, recovery of the Divine Feminine and more spiritually informed approaches to social justice. To avoid accusations of remoteness, solipsism and spiritual bypassing, Transpersonal Psychologists also need to better attend and creatively respond to prevailing political and socioeconomic conditions. In this keynote I will demonstrate how Transpersonal Psychology has at its heart, always constituted a critical/radical approach to Psychology and still retains the capacity to reinvigorate, re-enchant, transform and transcend.","PeriodicalId":92595,"journal":{"name":"Transpersonal psychology review","volume":"128 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"83414883","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Sixteen participants (n = 14 females, n = 2 males; age group = between forty-five and fifty-four years old) participated in research during a mindfulness and compassion course. Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis (IPA) was used to represent the experiences of the participants.Three superordinate themes were identified in the analysis: beginning the course; learning new skills and experiences; applications to everyday. Within the three themes there were twelve subordinate themes including expectations a person brings to mindfulness training; the social awkwardness of practicing in a group; meditation for beginners is hard work; the importance of the teacher in making it okay to experience uncertainty; the importance of metaphors/stories in making sense of mindfulness concepts; compassion: important but challenging; shifting awareness of body, place and mind; epiphanies/turning points/game changers: when it just makes sense; noticing suffering in everyday life; responding differently to suffering in everyday life; knowing the self-better: in a non-judgmental way; simple class vs. cluttered life: practicing in class is different to practicing in everyday life. The current study provides an understanding of the lived experience of participating on a mindfulness and compassion course.","PeriodicalId":92595,"journal":{"name":"Transpersonal psychology review","volume":"9 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"87524584","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The qualitative literature which has examined the topic of sudden and profound transformation has mostly focused on the antecedent and facilitative factors associated with this form of change. This study aims to explore the epiphanies of six participants who took part in unstructured interviews. The data generated was subjected to interpretative phenomenological analysis (IPA). Three major themes emerge: (i) Making sense of an ineffable experience; (ii) Who I was, what happened, who I am now; (iii) Illuminating purpose – each associated with a subtheme. A found poem is also presented for each major theme. The implications for therapeutic practitioners, mental health professionals and educators are discussed. It is concluded that the empathic understanding of such experiences may be enhanced from engaging with the dimensions of epiphanic experiences described here.","PeriodicalId":92595,"journal":{"name":"Transpersonal psychology review","volume":"12 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"89330740","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

HLP model is based on the premise that everyone is on an individual life journey to understand and experience life lessons such as assertiveness, joy, forgiveness. When clients experience traumas, these can create blocks and restrictions, resulting in repeated cycles of psychological distress in an individual’s life. HLP regards the ego as being responsible for maintaining the psychological distress. HLP teaches clients to recognise the impact of their ego, become an observer to challenges so that they can understand that the challenges are the life lesson. Honouring the ‘heart and soul’ rather than the ego enables clients to experience the lesson, make new choices in keeping with their authentic selves and freedom from suffering. HLP can be integrated into traditional psychotherapies or applied as a standalone therapy as part of the BPSS approach.","PeriodicalId":92595,"journal":{"name":"Transpersonal psychology review","volume":"39 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"77669892","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

These are scenarios that involve a number of variables, some of which may be unknown or only partly understood. The interdependencies, uncertainties and conflicting priorities create ‘wicked problems.’ Complex situations trigger differing viewpoints and can prompt an emotional response, particularly if current assumptions, values and principles are challenged. In such scenarios, the application of superordinate principles can help resolve issues by establishing a shared perspective. A review of research literature and various studies help clarify important steps in the process. The insights support solution-focused interventions, including action to develop psychological capital (PC). This enhances self-efficacy when individuals are faced with significant and unexpected demands.","PeriodicalId":92595,"journal":{"name":"Transpersonal psychology review","volume":"24 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"81004111","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Transition to adulthood is often a challenging time for many young people and this is especially true for this student cohort due to the triad of impairments often characterised by the diagnosis. There is currently limited research into the use of coaching, as a developmental tool in the empowerment of young people with autism in Ireland. This article captures the outcome of a small research study conducted by the author to explore how four individual coaching sessions could enhance self- awareness, self-perception and goal attainment skills amongst this student category, to better manage better transition to college and engagement in college life.","PeriodicalId":92595,"journal":{"name":"Transpersonal psychology review","volume":"21 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"76509807","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
