The clinical management of such patients is evolving towards a new spectrum of comorbidities. People living with HIV are increasingly experiencing a range of multiple comorbidities conditions. Measurement of comorbidity has currently received more attention from medical researchers. Therefore, this study has assessed self-reported chronic disease comorbidities among patients on antiretroviral therapy in Jimma, Southwest Ethiopia. Methods: A facility based cross-sectional study design was employed among 351 ART clients visiting Jimma University Teaching Hospital in March 2014 that were identified by systematic random sampling. Data were collected by interviewer-administered questionnaires that mainly assessed socio-demographic data, disease-related care factors, community factors and treatment delivery-related factors. Descriptive analysis was performed. Bivariate and multivariate logistic regression analyses were used to identify associated factors by using SPSS version software. Association between the explanatory and dependent variables was assessed at the p-value of less than 0.05. The results were presented in a narrative form, tables and graphs. Results: Of the total respondents, 137 (39%) had comorbidities with different diseases. From this, the majority of them have tuberculosis 71 (51.82 %), followed by hypertensions 26 (19.0%), asthma 21 (15.3%), diabetes 11 (8.0 %) and heart diseases 8 (5.8%).Being current CD4 count < 250 cells/ml (AOR=2.715 [CI = 1.461, 5.1 poor level of general health conditions (AOR=5.894 [CI= 3.172, 10.951]), discontinuation opportunistic infection prophylaxes (AOR= 2.578 [CI = 1.371,4.845]), having any clinical symptoms for HIV/AIDS (AOR= 6.46 [CI= 3.428, 12.175]) and having substance use disorders (AOR= 4.925 [CI= 2.629, 9.225]) were factors that shown statistically significant associations with having comorbidities. Conclusions: The finding indicated that magnitudes of comorbidities were numerous. Different clinical and behavioral factors mentioned above lead the patients to the development of comorbidities. Therefore, we recommend the concerned organization to give greater emphasis on those identified factors as influential and due attention should be given to those factors curving the problems and burden of comorbidities among the HIV/AIDS patients.","PeriodicalId":92531,"journal":{"name":"International journal of healthcare and medical sciences","volume":"10 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-09-17","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"135258526","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Resistance of Staphylococcus aureus to antibiotics could be as a result of the presence of plasmids or resistance genes. The need to carry out plasmid curing of the isolates is very essential. The aim of the study was therefore to determine the antibiotics resistance pattern of staphylococcus aureus associated with wound infection amongst patients accessing university of Port Harcourt Teaching Hospital, Rivers State, Nigeria. A total of 150 specimens from different types of wounds (traumatic wound, caesarean section, scrotal wound, surgical wounds, burns, diabetic foot, and plastic surgery) were collected from the Hospital for a period of six months and processed for isolation of S. aureus, following standard microbiological procedures. The specimens were cultured on sterile Mannitol Salt Agar (MSA) plates and incubated at 37ºC for 24 hours. Antibiotic susceptibility tests of the isolates was performed using the Kirby-Bauer disc diffusion method, following CLSI guidelines. Plasmid genes of the isolates were cured using acridine orange. The study showed a decrease in antibiotic resistance of 17.3% for ofloxacin (OFL), 13.8% for gentamicin (GEN) and 3.5% for both ceftazidime (CAZ) and ceftriatone (CTR) after plasmid curing, with no apparent change in resistance for the rest of the antibiotics. The results of this study represent serious public health concerns, thus emphasizing the need for proper wound management.","PeriodicalId":92531,"journal":{"name":"International journal of healthcare and medical sciences","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-07-19","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"42762129","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The present study was carried out to investigate the protective effects of Graviola aqueous extract (GAE) against carbon tetrachloride (CCl4) which induced hepatic injury in rats. Thirty male albino Wistar rats were divided into five groups: group I was used as controls, group II received daily GAE (300 mg/kg bw) alone orally for six weeks, group III received by IP injection CCl4 in olive oil (50% V/V, 2 ml/kg bw), twice a week for two weeks, group IV, CCl4+GAE (curative group) injected CCl4 twice a week for two weeks then concomitant with GAE (300 mg/kg BW) daily for next four weeks, and group V, GAE+CCl4 (prophylactic group), received GAE, 300 mg/kg/day once daily orally four weeks, then concomitant with CCl4 twice a week for next two weeks. The obtained results showed that the administration of CCl4 caused hepatotoxicity as monitored by the significant (p≤0.05) increase in the levels of hepatic markers enzymes (alanine aminotransferase, ALT, aspartate aminotransferase, AST and alkaline phosphatase, ALP), total bilirubin (TB) and a decrease in hematological parameters such as white blood cell (WBC), red blood cell count (RBC), and blood platelet count (PLT). Also, our results showed that CCl4 caused a significant (p≤0.05) increase in oxidative stress markers (malondialdehyde, MDA, reactive oxygen species, ROS, nitric oxide, NO), pro-inflammatory tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-α,) level, and proapoptotic markers caspase-3, and B-cell lymphoma 2 (BCL-2)-like protein 4 (Bax). Furthermore, a significant (p≤0.05) decrease in superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT), glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px), reduced glutathione (GSH), and an antiapoptotic agent B-cell lymphoma 2 (Bcl-2) was observed in liver tissue. The detected CCl4 effects were normalized by GAE administration, either a prophylactic or curative dose. Besides, GAE reduced the histopathological changes induced by CCl4.In conclusion, GAE was effective in both protecting and enhancing the liver deficits induced by CCl4 through many potential mechanisms including antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, antiapoptotic properties. Therefore, Graviola extracts up to 300 (mg/kg bw) could be considered a promising hepatoprotective supplement but more human clinical trials are also needed to validate the findings of the current research.","PeriodicalId":92531,"journal":{"name":"International journal of healthcare and medical sciences","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-05-02","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"42469352","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Castleman’s disease is divided into unicentric Castleman disease, which involved a single enlarged lymph node or region of lymph nodes, and multicentric Castleman disease, which involved multiple lymph node stations. In this paper we highlight the presentation of Castleman’s disease on a female patient to share our experience with literature review. Case Presentation: A 29 years old female patient was referred to our surgical outpatient clinic from the peripheral hospital with right & left painless neck cervical mass slowly growing which started 3 years ago along with a right breast lump and patient was RVD non-reactive. On physical examination she was severely wasted. She had a 4cm by 3cm mass of the right supraclavicular region & another mass of 3cm x 1 cm mass on the left supraclavicular area. Her abdominal examination revealed hepatomegaly which is extended 8 cm below the subcostal margin. Histology report of cervical mass concluded Reactive lymph nodes with features of hyaline vascular Castleman disease and Breast mass revealed fibroadenoma. Immunohistochemistry of cervical node biopsy for HHV8 is negative. Blood result of inflammatory markers: C - reactive protein was 459 mg/L. Conclusions: Owing to the rarity of this condition, Castleman Disease Collaborative Network (CDCN) guideline is important for assessment & treatment plan.","PeriodicalId":92531,"journal":{"name":"International journal of healthcare and medical sciences","volume":"1 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-03-27","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"41486421","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Some of its usefulness has been documented, while its effect on weight changes is still understudied. This study was carried out to evaluate the weight changes, physical changes, and histological effects of cannabis on the kidney of Wistar rats. Materials and Methods: They were divided into five groups, A, B, C, D, and E comprising five rats each. The study involved 25 growing Wistar rats with weight ranges between 250-275g and 50 growing Wistar rats for LD50, with weight ranges between 250-275g. Groups A served as the control and received only growers’ mash and distilled water, while groups B, C, D, and E received 65mg/kg body weight, 130mg/kg body weight, 162mg/kg body weight, and 194mg/kg body weight of cannabis respectively. Animal weights were measured before and after the administration of cannabis. The control rats and test animals were sacrificed after 28 days, and the kidney was harvested for histological processing. The results obtained were compared with the control using the statistical package for social science (SPSS) version 20 with a level of significance (P<0.05). Results: The results on weight recorded were; group B (310.0±14.14), groups C (273.0±2.32), D (295.0±7.07), and E (277.0±3.53) recorded significant (P<0.05) lower weight when compared with the control group The control kidney tissue section, however, presented normal cytoarchitectural features of the kidney while the test groups showed histological alterations which were dosage induce. Photomicrograph of group B kidney tissue section shows kidney cytoarchitecture with vacuolations and mild glomerular distortion, photomicrograph of group C kidney tissue section shows kidney cytoarchitecture with vacuolations, photomicrograph of group D kidney tissue section shows shrinking glomeruli which were adjacent to a normal glomerulus and photomicrograph of group E kidney tissue section shows glomerulus surrounded by cellular infiltrates. Conclusion: The study’s findings revealed that cannabis has a deleterious effect on the cytoarchitecture of the kidney in a dose-dependent way. Also, more studies are needed to identify the time in relation to dosage consumption effect, knowing which could be harmful to living and the LD50 that would produce 100% mortality.","PeriodicalId":92531,"journal":{"name":"International journal of healthcare and medical sciences","volume":"109 9","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-12-12","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"41331095","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This study aims to evaluate plasma as a noninvasive procedure for PBK diseases through drainage of painful and annoying bullae. Methods: Three eyes of three patients with no vision potential were included in this study. Plasma spots are applied on bullae to empty the fluid inside, and also to attach the top of the bullae to the bottom. We evaluated Pain scores, tearing, and burning sensations (scale of 0 to 10) before treatment and one week, one month, and six months after treatment. Results: The results showed that all the annoying bullae entirely eliminated in all patients. No complications and recurrence were observed during the operation and one week, one month, and six months after the procedure. After treatment, there was no tearing and burning sensation. All of the patients scored ten for pain before treatment and zero after treatment. There were no changes in the vision of the patients after treatment. Conclusions: Based on the results, the PANIS method can be used as a safe method for eliminating bullae which are not a good candidate for vision amelioration treatment. This method is safe, quick, office base and inexpensive, which can decrease pain in these patients.","PeriodicalId":92531,"journal":{"name":"International journal of healthcare and medical sciences","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-09-17","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"45019941","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This is a rodent-borne disease, which has serious consequences on the population and hospital staff in endemic areas. Lassa fever is a public health concern inflicting severe morbidity and important mortality (Case rate (CFR) ≥ 50%), particularly in epidemic cases. The disease has emerged as one of the most prevalent and debilitating viral hemorrhagic fevers and is endemic in the West Africa region. The control and prevention of the regular outbreak of the disease have become a herculean task in the affected; there is inadequate healthcare facility (including laboratory/diagnostic and care centers), poor socioeconomic environment, lack of awareness among the populace, and presence of favorable ecologic niche for the survival and propagation of the natural host and reservoir mouse (Mastomys natalensis) of Lassa virus. It is mainly transmitted by contact with excretions and secretions of infected rats via foods and water as well as exposure to other contaminated items. It is an enveloped, single-stranded (SS) segmented RNA virus with the ability to replicate very rapidly. The virus infects almost every tissue in the human body resulting in multisystem dysfunction.
