It is characterized by the development of granulomatous inflammation in several organs, mainly affecting the respiratory system. An adult male domestic canary (Serinus canaria domestica) weighing 14.5 g was received for examination. Multiple nodules were identified in the epicardium, air sacs, and lungs. Histologically these nodules corresponded to granulomas, in which numerous thin, filamentous branching bacteria were identified. Gram stains of the epicardium, air sacs, and lungs revealed many filamentous branching Gram-positive bacteria. These bacteria were also strongly acid-fast positive by Fite-Faraco stain. PCR end-point analysis and sequencing using total DNA extracted from formalin-fixed paraffin-embedded samples of lungs, heart, and air sacs confirmed the presence of Nocardia asteroides. To the best of the authors’ knowledge, this is the first case report of nocardiosis associated with Nocardia asteroides in a Domestic Canary (Serinus canaria domestica) in Mexico.","PeriodicalId":9223,"journal":{"name":"Brazilian Journal of Veterinary Pathology","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"135445789","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Here we characterize the neuropathology of natural CaHV-1 infection in 25 dogs. The disease affected predominantly male dogs (22 cases). Clinical signs in 15 cases varied and sudden death was reported in 10 cases. All dogs had the typical areas of necrosis and hemorrhage in multiple organs with eosinophilic intranuclear viral inclusions in epithelial and/or inflammatory cells in multiple organs in 21 cases. Cerebral swelling and reddening were reported in 3 cases. Neurohistologic changes consisted of mild lymphoplasmacytic meningoencephalitis with occasional vasculitis and widespread glial nodules. Rare intranuclear viral inclusions (4 cases) were observed in endothelial cells or inflammatory cells in glial nodules. Cerebellum was examined in 11 cases and had extensive segmental necrosis of Purkinje cell layer (8 cases) and granule neurons in the internal (9 cases) or external (2 cases) granular cell layer. Intranuclear viral inclusions were observed in 8 cases and occurred in necrotic granule neurons in the inner granular cell layer (7 cases), outer granular cell layer (2 cases), Purkinje neurons (1 case), or endothelial cells (1 case). Diagnostic confirmation in 23 cases was based on routine histology and fluorescent antibody testing for CaHV-1 on fresh or frozen tissue samples. A routine diagnosis was based solely on the visualization of intranuclear viral inclusions in 2 cases.","PeriodicalId":9223,"journal":{"name":"Brazilian Journal of Veterinary Pathology","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"135445793","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The main gross lesion was an exophytic mass with a pinkish color, irregular surface, and margins, sometimes with a cerebrum-like appearance, extending from the right cervical and scapular regions to the craniomedial portion of the right forelimb. Histologically, the mass consisted of a well-delimited proliferation of fibrous tissue in the superficial dermis, covered by a proliferation of keratinocytes with low cellular atypia. Diffuse and severe hyperkeratosis of the epidermis was also observed. Immunohistochemistry for papillomavirus was negative, indicating that this animal had spontaneous non-viral papillomatosis. This condition is rare in pigs, with only two other cases described in the literature.","PeriodicalId":9223,"journal":{"name":"Brazilian Journal of Veterinary Pathology","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"135448215","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Three of sixty-one feedlot animals from the same pen developed unilateral facial paralysis primarily with ear dropping, droopy eyelids (eyelid ptosis), and head tilt. Postmortem exanimation revealed cranioventral consolidation of the lungs (bronchopneumonia) and the presence of abundant purulent exudate in the tympanic bulla (otitis). The affected lung had a nodular appearance. Histopathological examination of the middle and inner ear showed necrotizing, suppurative otitis, and bronchopneumonia with bronquiectasis compatible with M. bovis infection. Immunohistochemistry of the lung, and middle and inner ear revealed abundant M. bovis antigen. The ELISA tests revealed that the two animals showing facial paralysis had seroconverted for M. bovis. To our knowledge, these are the first reported cases of M. bovis otitis in Argentina. These findings should alert veterinarians and diagnosticians of the relevance of M. bovis as a cause of otitis and facial paralysis in cattle.","PeriodicalId":9223,"journal":{"name":"Brazilian Journal of Veterinary Pathology","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"135448517","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Here, we describe a case of cryptococcosis caused by Cryptococcus gattii in a captive African pygmy hedgehog and the other anatomopathological findings. The macroscopic analysis of the lung found white-yellowish masses of gelatinous consistency. The microscopic analysis of the lung revealed severe pulmonary involvement resulting from granulomatous pneumonia caused by C. gattii yeasts, identified through polymerase chain reaction and sequencing. Other histopathological findings included hepatic steatosis, biliary hyperplasia, and renal lesions with deposition of hyaline cylinders in the lumen of tubular epithelial cells, glomerulopathy, and tubular necrosis. Our findings demonstrate the importance of anatomopathological studies in diagnosing relevant diseases in the context of one health. We emphasize that adequate environmental management is essential to avoid the emergence of certain diseases in captivity.","PeriodicalId":9223,"journal":{"name":"Brazilian Journal of Veterinary Pathology","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"135448521","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

According to some data, the formation of cell lineage of mesenchymal cells occurs due to the transformation of epidermal basket cells surrounding the glandular epithelium. In this case, the formation of a cartilage anlage with its further transformation into differentiated bone tissue occurs. The article contains information about the structure and features of the location and interaction of mixed tumors’ glandular and stromal components in female dogs (n=29). It was revealed that in addition to simple mixed neoplasms, tumors with proplasia of the mesenchymal component into highly differentiated cartilage or bone tissue were also often registered. To confirm subcellular changes in the expression of certain types of proteins, such as a-SMA and vimentin, an IHC study was used. The expression of the studied biomarkers was established in mesenchymal fibroblastic differon cells and myoepithelial cells. The intensity of immunoreactive material expression ranged from moderate (2+) to strong (3+), indicating changes in myoepithelial cells’ genotype during the formation of mixed mammary neoplasms.","PeriodicalId":9223,"journal":{"name":"Brazilian Journal of Veterinary Pathology","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"135442390","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Mycobacteroides chelonae-abscessus group (MCABC) is the most important emerging nontuberculous mycobacterium pathogen in humans. This report describes a systemic MCABC infection in a captive E. crassus, with heterophilic granulomatous lesions in the lungs, liver, kidneys, and peripheral nervous system. Histochemical stains demonstrated Gram-positive and alcohol-acid-fast bacilli that cross-reacted with antigens of Bacillus Calmette-Guérin in immunohistochemistry. A nested polymerase chain reaction followed by DNA sequencing indicated the genus of the mycobacteria. Despite the rapid systemic spread of MCABC, it is necessary to develop safer, more rapid, and more effective treatments and diagnoses to understand the role of reptiles in this disease.","PeriodicalId":9223,"journal":{"name":"Brazilian Journal of Veterinary Pathology","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"135448213","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This study aimed to report a case of unilateral primary renal HSA with pulmonary and brain metastasis in a dog. A 10-year-old mixed-breed male dog was treated at the Hospital Professor Ricardo Alexandre Hippler from Universidade Vila Velha (HV-UVV) with signs of hematuria. A mass in the left kidney was detected by ultrasound, and no metastasis was detected on chest radiography. Unilateral nephrectomy was performed, and the material underwent histopathological examination, which was concluded as HSA. The animal died 48 days after surgery, and a necropsy was performed, showing marked hemothorax and multifocal metastasis of HSA in the lung and brain. The absence of nodules at other sites before surgery indicates a primary renal origin. The late diagnosis of the disease may have contributed to the spread of metastasis and, consequently, the development of hemothorax. Histopathological and necroscopic examinations were essential to confirm the diagnosis.","PeriodicalId":9223,"journal":{"name":"Brazilian Journal of Veterinary Pathology","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"135448519","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
